KIRK DOUGLAS WALKER September 22, 1956- July 9, 2000 Peacefully after a long and courageous battle with cancer, Kirk Walker, age 43, passed away at St. Boniface General Hospital on Sunday, July 9, 2000. Kirk will be sadly missed by his wife Nicole Kellar; parents Doug and Sophie Walker; sister Dorothy Bird (Terry) (nephews, Scott and Brett) brothers, Brad (Charisse) and Keith (Marnie). His niece Camryn, born to Keith and Marnie on July 9, 2000, will have a very special guardian angel to watch over her. Kirk will also be missed by numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Kirk lived most of his life in Transcona, attending Central School, John Gunn and T.C.I. At the time of his death, Kirk was employed by Motor Coach Industries Ltd. Previously, he worked for various other firms where he was always known as a cheerful, dependable, hard working employee. During his employment with the CN, Kirk enjoyed being a member of the Symington Yard First Aid Competition Team for five years, four as team captain. He was very proud when his team won first place in Regional and System Competitions in 1986 and he was voted "Best Tyro Captain in System." Kirk was a kind, caring, compassionate man who was always ready to lend a helping hand. He loved listening to music, cruising in his big green caddy and spending time at the lake with his family. Although Kirks favourite kind of music was the blues, his personality was just the opposite. He was a positive, upbeat person whose quick wit and sense of humour could always make us laugh. Kirks robust physique and physical strength that earned him the nickname "Big K" was diminished by his illness but it could not destroy his true inner strength. We can only imagine the suffering he endured throughout his illness because he never complained and never stopped smiling and joking. He always worried only about how it was affecting everyone else close to him. Kirks deep faith, strength and courage were an inspiration to all those who cared for him including family, friends and the hospital staff who referred to Kirk as a "joy." The family would like to thank the staff of St. Boniface General Hospital Palliative Care Unit for the comfort and care they provided to Kirk. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 13, at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd. (across from the Mint). In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba, 100 Olivia St., Winnipeg, Man., R3E 9Z9. God saw you getting tired, When a cure was not to be, He wrapped you in His loving arms And whispered,"Come to Me." You suffered much in silence Your spirit did not bend You faced your pain with courage Until the very end. You tried so hard to stay with us Your fight was all in vain God took you in His loving arms And freed you from your pain. A golden heart stopped beating Two gentle hands at rest, God broke our hearts to prove to us He only takes the best. Your presence we all miss. Your memory we treasure. Arrangements entrusted to: GLEN LAWN FUNERAL HOME 455 Lagimodiere Blvd. 982-7550
