DOUGLAS KEITH CAMPBELL August 10, 1913 - July 11, 2000 Doug was born on August 10, 1913 at Shenston, Ontario, the second of four children. After several moves his family finally settled at Alonsa where Doug spent over 60 years of his life. He was a farmer and had a very fine herd of Hereford Cattle that he especially loved. >From an early age Doug showed a keen interest in nature. His sister Jean liked to tell of him as a little boy watching a bee, and then putting a pail over it and sitting on the pail. To Dougs surprise and dismay, the bee found a hole in the pail and stung him where he sat. However, that didnt deter him and he later kept bees and sold or gave honey to neighbours, friends and family until just two years ago. He enjoyed gardening, playing cards and tinkering with small machinery. He also enjoyed making wooden puzzles which he generously gave away. Doug loved music and playing the guitar and played for dances in his younger years. We, as a family, like to remember his wit and humour and funny stories from the past. Uncle Doug was a wonderful runner even into middle age. One time when he was young, he was running in the dark down a bush trail, when there in front of him with its tail raised threateningly, was a skunk. He couldnt stop, so he had to jump over the skunk, but fortunately only one shoe got sprayed. In later years his hearing and eyesight began to fail and in the fall of 1999 he moved to Langruth to be closer to family. In the spring of this year he was found to have liver cancer. After a hard struggle with the disease he died on July 11, 2000 at the Gladstone Hospital at two oclock in the afternoon. He was just one month from being 87 years old. We are grateful that he is at rest. Predeceased by his parents, Dugald and Annie Jean Campbell; his sister and brother-in-law, Jean and Gordon Thordarson; his brother-in-law Bill Cardno, and his brother Jack Campbell. Doug leaves to mourn his sister Evelyn Cardno; his sister-in-law Noreen Campbell; ten nieces and nephews, and nine grand nieces and nephews. Uncle Doug was very kind and generous to family and friends and especially to children and will be very sadly missed by all. Dougs family is very grateful to the people who have cared for him in the past months. To the home care workers and also the doctors and nurses at the Gladstone Hospital and the volunteers in the palliative care unit. Thank you - your kindness will not be forgotten. Doug Campbell was a member of the Living Church of God. Funeral service will be held at the Alonsa Community Hall on Monday, July 17 at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Eng. Monson officiating. Interment will follow at Grays Cemetery, after which there will be a reception at the Alonsa Community Hall. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, memorial donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba, 100 Olivia Street, Winnipeg, Man., R3E 9Z9. Clarkes Funeral Home, Gladstone in care of arrangements.
