Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJOSEPH ALEXANDER PETRIE On Friday, July 7, 2000, Joseph Petrie passed away peacefully at the Grace General Hospital in Winnipeg. Mr. Petrie was born May 12, 1908 in Aberdeen, Scotland to Charles M. and Elizabeth (Beattie) Petrie. He immigrated to Winnipeg in 1928 after completing a grocers apprenticeship. He began working for Merchants Consolidated in the warehouse and worked his way up to become Vice President and General Manager, retiring after 47 years with the company. After retiring in 1974, he served on the board of McKenzie Seed Company for many years. Well-known and respected for his forward thinking in the grocery industry in Canada in the 1950s and 60s, he was instrumental in the formation of United Grocery Wholesale in Calgary, Alberta. He was a member of the Sons of Scotland and the Saint Andrews Society in Winnipeg. He was an avid curler at the Deer Lodge Curling Club and golfer at Pine Ridge Golf Club. His favourite lunch site for the past 50 years was Rae & Jerrys. He married Gladys Mae (nee Nelson) Petrie on December 24, 1937. She predeceased him in 1987, just short of their 50th anniversary. His parents and his brothers Keith, James and Harold also predeceased him. He always said that his family and friends were the most important part of his life. He is survived and sorely missed by his daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth and Dr. Robert I. Noble of Butte, Montana and by granddaughters, Vivian Noble Moyle and her husband Grant, of Chicago and Roberta Noble of Minneapolis. His sister Elizabeth Petrie Kogan in London, England and numerous cousins, nephews and nieces, especially Dr. James and Xanthe Petrie and Dr. Gavin Petrie in Scotland, also survive him. Mr. Petrie had a stroke in July, 1999, which resulted in his having to leave 331 Winchester, his home of 62 years, for The Westhaven, where he received wonderful care in his decline. His family would like to thank all of his friends and care givers who have been so supportive over the past year. We especially thank Ray Daniels, Linda Daniels and Ron Littlejohn and the late Kay Daniels for all of their loving care to Joe when we could not be there for him, and even when we could. At his request, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, July 18 at 1:00 p.m. at St. James Anglican Church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Winnipeg Harvest or the charity of the donors choice. THOMSON FUNERAL CHAPELS 783-7211
