GERTRUDE EVELYN BASKIER It is with great sadness that Elinor and Madeleine announce the passing of their mother Gertrude Evelyn Baskier. She died peacefully on July 24, 2000 at the Lions Manor, surrounded by her family. Gertrude was born June 11, 1913 in London, Ont. at the family farm, London Township. She graduated as a registered nurse from Victoria Hospital in 1935 and practiced nursing for five years. It was, however, after her marriage in 1941 to her beloved husband, Ernest Baskier, that her true career began. Her years as a ministers wife across the country, ranging from rural parishes such as Kelwood, Man. to major urban churches in London and Winnipeg, provided an avenue for her strong caring for people. She gave freely of herself as President of the United Church Women, University of Winnipeg Womens Auxiliary and Alpha House to name a few. She ran the thrift shop at Knox United Church for nine years, greatly increasing its reach and revenues. It is however in her family relationships that she is remembered best and with great love. She was a doting grandmother, known as "Grandma Punk", a supportive mother and a loving partner. Gertrude was predeceased by her husband Rev. Ernest Baskier in 1989. She leaves to mourn her passing yet celebrate her life, her daughters, Elinor Wilson and Madeleine (Sam) Rochon (Jean-Yves) and her grandchildren, Benjamin and Alison Wilson and Amanda Savoie. She is survived by a sister Rheta Tackabury in London, Ont., a niece and two nephews. Mom, go in peace and " may the road rise up to meet you and until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of his hand." Our sincere thanks to the staff at Lions Manor and Lions Manor Personal Care Centre for their unceasing care and attention. At her request, in lieu of flowers, donations would be appreciated to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Canadian Cancer Society. Friends may call at the Thomson Funeral Chapels, 669 Broadway on Tuesday, July 25 (tonight) from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. A funeral service will be held on Wed. July 26 at 11:00 a.m. in Knox United Church with Rev.s David Murata and Don Hilton officiating. Following a reception, the interment will take place in Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens.
