Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryHJALMAR MELVIN KAMPEN July 4, 1922 - July 25, 2000 With great sorrow we announce the passing of Hjalmar (Hal) Kampen at the Grace Hospital at the age of 78 years, after a brief illness. Dad was born and raised on a farm in Compeer, Alberta, the son of Scandinavian immigrants. After serving overseas during the Second World War, he lived in England for several years before returning to Canada in 1953, settling in Winnipeg. He spent the rest of his career in the R.C.A.F. as a Warrant Officer, retiring from the military in 1972. He continued to work in various positions until 1995. Dad was actively involved in various community organizations, including the Shrine Temple, Royal Canadian Legion (St. James Branch), Folklorama, and the Scandinavian Cultural Centre, as well as Our Saviours Lutheran Church. He was particularly proud of his Norwegian and Danish heritage, and had many dear friends in the local Scandinavian community. He made a trip to Norway in 1972, as well as a trip to Norway and England in 1996. He was predeceased by his father Hans in 1972; mother Anna in 1988; and son David in 1985. He is remembered fondly by Marian, his wife of 44 years; daughter Karen and her husband Dr. Andrew Davidson, of Winnipeg; son Paul of Bradford, UK; son Philip, daughter-in-law Moira and their children Stephanie and Timothy of Brandford, UK; sister Doris Doyle and her husband Alvin, of Winnipeg; and numerous other relatives and friends. Dads health had been failing over the past three years due to a stroke in 1997. Nevertheless he was able to live at home up until his recent hospitalization. His days often included shopping trips, lunches at the Scandinavian Centre, and very special visits from Andrews dog Cedric, who gave him much happiness in his final years. He was especially happy to attend the wedding of Karen and Andrew last month. Dads greatest accomplishment in life was to be very important to the lives of his family and friends. He will be truly missed. Prayer services will be take place on Friday, July 28 at 7:00 p.m., at Neil Bardal Inc., 984 Portage Ave. Funeral service will occur on Saturday, July 29 at 10:00 a.m., at Our Saviours Lutheran Church, 600 Minto St., with Pastor Stacey Moroz officiating. Interment will follow at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens, followed by a reception at the Scandinavian Cultural Centre, 764 Erin St. All are welcome to attend. If family or friends so desire, flowers or donations may be given to Our Saviours Lutheran Church. The family wishes to extend our sincerest thanks to all the devoted Home Care staff, who enabled Dad to remain at home with us. Also thanks to the kind staff at Grace Hospital during Dads final days.
