Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryLAKIE ELVINA GIBSON (nee McCLEARY) Lakie was born May 3, 1910 in West Prospect and she died Wednesday, July 26, 2000 at the Portage General Hospital. Parents Cyrus and Bella and her siblings, Ray, Aubrey, Audree, Newton and Vivian predeceased Lakie. Brother Lance and sister Olive survive her. Left also to mourn is her devoted husband Bill of Portage; sons, Craig (Beth) of Victoria, B.C. and Randy (Susan) of Winnipeg; grandchildren, Shane, Greg and Tracy and great-grandchildren, Michelle and Marie. Lakie grew up on the farm and later moved with her family to Portage. She attended West Prospect, Central and the Portage Collegiate Institute. In her early years she worked at Eatons and Babbs Hardware, where she met her future husband of 58 years. Lakie is remembered for her classic style which served her well at McClearys Ladies Wear, the business she and her sisters successfully ran for 40 years. In 1942, after an extended courtship, she married Bill Gibson. With the exception of the war, they have been inseparable best friends and constant companions. While raising her boys she enjoyed gardening, baking, canning and sewing. Lakie was active in the community on the Local Council of Women, Toastmistresses, the Library Board and the United Church Womens Auxiliary. Lakie was a thoughtful, nurturing daughter and mother, a traditional and loving grandmother, an ideal mother-in-law and a devoted wife and she will be missed by all who knew her. Funeral service will be held at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel, 56 Royal Road S., Portage on Sunday, July 29 at 1:30 p.m. with viewing prior to the service. Rev. Julie Baker will be officiating. Interment is to follow at the family plot at Hillside Cemetery. A reception will follow at the Herman Prior Centre. In lieu of flowers, the family invites donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, 301 - 352 Donald St., Winnipeg, Man., R3B 2H8. A tree will be planted and cared for in memory of Lakie at Evergreen Memorial Gardens by McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel who are entrusted with the arrangements.
