ALLAN JOHN CURRIE Peacefully, on Saturday, July 29, 2000, at the St. Boniface Hospital, our beloved husband, father and grandfather, Allan John Currie, passed into eternal rest. He will be forever lovingly remembered by his wife Irene; his son Daryl and wife Zdenka, son Gary and grandchildren, Allan Jr. and Brenda. He is also survived by his sister and brother-in-law Jane and Ralph Hayes; sister Dorothy Ronyck and many nieces and nephews from both sides of the family. Allan was predeceased by his father William Robert Currie (1978), mother Marie Eugenie (1986) and twin brothers at infancy. Allan, or Al as he was known by friends, was employed by the C.N.R. when in 1957 he married his beloved wife Irene. In 1961 he joined the Transcona Police Force, finishing first in his class at Police School and spent ten years on the force. He also earned a diploma from the R.C.M.P. in Identification Methods and Techniques and formed bonds with his fellow officers that would last forever. He then became Assistant Fire Commissioner for Manitoba and later moved into insurance as an adjuster. In 1981 Al entered the casket industry and eventually opened his own business, Colonial Caskets, along with his good friend John Malaschuk. Colonial Caskets prospered with the help of his excellent staff and will continue to do so in the very capable hands of his son Daryl. Al enjoyed a good laugh as much as anyone and loved our large family gatherings. He was also a sports enthusiast: curling, golf, hockey, baseball, and devoted countless hours to coaching Junior players: he was a coach, mentor and role model. He was elected President of Southwood Golf and Country Club and made many lifelong friendships there. In 1986, he moved over to Elmhurst Golf and Country Club and remained an active member for 14 years, enjoying every moment there. Whether it be associates from the funeral and casket industry, old police pals, golfing buddies, family or friends, he was a highly respected man and a devoted husband and father. His memory will be cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him. The family would like to thank Dr. Katz, Dr. Johnson and staff at the St. Boniface Palliative Care Ward for their care and kindness. Visitation will be held Wednesday evening, August 2, between 7:00 and 8:00 p.m. at the Transcona Funeral Chapel, 1800 Day St. Funeral service to follow on Thursday, August 3, at 2:00 p.m., also at the chapel with Pastor Larry Ulrich officiating. Interment at Transcona Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, if friends so wish, donations made in Allans memory to CancerCare Manitoba Foundation, 100 Olivia St., Winnipeg, Man., R3E 9Z9, would be appreciated. Transcona Funeral Chapel in care of arrangements.
