Art was born at Brandon General Hospital on June 21, 1942. He had many fond memories of his childhood in Brandon, especially times shared with his close chums who became lifelong friends. As a child, he was involved in Cubs and Scouts, and played baseball for the Brandon Police "pony" league. He enjoyed many hunting and fishing expeditions with his father, Harold, who was a member of the Brandon Police Service, and his brother, Ellis. Art attended Alexandra Elementary School, Earl Oxford Junior High School, and Vincent Massey High School. He delivered papers as a child, and later worked at the Canadian Brown Steel Tank Co. Ltd. during school holidays, in order to help out at home after his father passed away in 1957. Through it all, he knew he wanted to be a banker, and he began to pursue that goal as soon as he finished high school, starting at the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC) in Brandon on July 3, 1962. Art continued with CIBC for 38 years. From his first position as a teller at the Rosser Avenue branch in Brandon, he made his way up in the bank, with many transfers from branch to branch. His first promotion was to Altona, Manitoba, where he was an Accountants Assistant. From there, he was sent to Portage la Prairie, where in 1964 he met and fell in love with Janice, a teller who was to become his wife. Janice and Art dated through several of Arts transfers and promotions and were married in May of 1968. They made their home in Winnipeg, Manitoba where both continued to work for CIBC, albeit at different branches. Arts family grew when, in March of 1974, a son arrived, Brett Jason, and then a daughter, Candace Joan, in October of 1976. During this time, Art worked at various branches of CIBC in Winnipeg, working his way from Accountant to Credit Officer, to Assistant Manager, and finally Manager in 1974 at the Selkirk and McGregor branch. Art managed several different CIBC branches in Winnipeg before becoming Assistant Inspector of Special Loans at Regional Office in Winnipeg, and later, Senior Assistant Inspector. Finally, in 1986, Art took a promotion to Account Manager of Independent Business / Agriculture, and moved with his family back to Brandon, to the branch where his career began. Art continued his position at the Rosser Avenue branch of CIBC until his illness progressed to the point where he was unable, in May 2000. During his long and distinguished career with CIBC, Art received recognition and awards for his many accomplishments. In 1968, he was recognized as one of the top five producers in the region. In March, 1994, he received the Senior Vice-Presidents Award for Excellence, and in October, 1995, he received an Achievers Nomination for Sales. In 1999, he was an Achievers Program National Winner. Art devoted his life to the bank, and was beloved by many of his customers who cherished him for the pride he took in his work and the personal attention he gave to each and every one. He will be sadly missed by coworkers and customers alike. Art was an active member of the community as well, devoting his spare time to the Rotary Club of Brandon, where he was a longtime member. He served as Treasurer for 10 years, and received the Paul Harris award in 1997. Art was also a member of Central United Church in Brandon, where he served on the Administration and Management committee. In his leisure time, Art was a regular with the coffee gang at Chicken Pauls, and he enjoyed golfing. He especially enjoyed spending times with family and friends at his cabin at Clear Lake. He was a Board Member of the Cottage Association for Grey Owl Estates at the lake. Art also enjoyed his yearly road trips to Nova Scotia to visit his daughter. Aside from his career and many accomplishments, Art will be remembered as a wonderful and loving husband and father. He was devoted to his family, providing endless love, support and encouragement. He has left a void that can never be filled. He is survived by and will be sadly missed by his wife Janice Lynn (Tully) son, Brett Jason; daughter Candace Joan (Seddon-Davies) son-in-law, Ben W.P. (Seddon-Davies) brother Harold Ellis; and sister-in-law, Fran. He was predeceased by his infant brother; his father Harold and mother Mary. We will gather to mourn his passing and celebrate his life on Tuesday, August 1 at 2:00 p.m. at the Brockie Donovan Chapel, Brandon. Rev. Gordon Stevenson of Central United Church will officiate.
