WILLIAM VERNON (PETE) SPEIRS On Monday July 31, 2000 William Vernon Speirs of Manitou, MB, passed away very peacefully at the age of 87. Dad was born in Manitou October 25, 1912. He lived in Manitou all his life with exception of the last couple of weeks when he and Mum moved to the Charleswood Care Centre in Winnipeg due their failing health. Dad and Mum would have celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary on December 28, 2000. Dad enjoyed life to the fullest and his strong desire to live resulted in a successful recovery from heart problems in 1989 and a session with cancer in 1998. Dad enjoyed the outdoors immensely. He told us in his last few days that some of his best times were spent at the "duck camp" at Grassy Lake. He loved to reminisce about those times. Friends were also very important to him and in many cases took priority. With help from many special friends, people, and businesses in Manitou, Dad was able to live with Mum in their own place, which was extremely important to him. Dad was very grateful to Tom and Irene Chalmers, the Manitou home care workers and those special people for their help, kindness and consideration through his later years. Predeceased by wife Mary Patricia (Pat) eight days prior. Left to fondly remember him, son Greg and Connie of Winnipeg; grandson Darren, Margo and great-granddaughter Delainey of Calgary; grandson Trevor and Tracey of Winnipeg; sister Elsie Helgason of Morden; sister-in-law Ena Chalmers of Broadview, SK; brother-in-law Bill Chalmers of Richmond, BC; many nieces, nephews and friends. With respect for Dads wishes, cremation has taken place. A small graveside service will take place at the Manitou Cemetery on Thursday, August 3 at 2:00 p.m., with Rev. Dr. Daniel Hansen officiating. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Pembina Manitou Foundation, Box 228, Manitou, MB R0G 1G0. Adams Funeral Home of Notre Dame, Manitoba in care of arrangements. 248-2201 or 1-888-400-2326.
