Fred was born the eighth son of Herbert and Alice Howard of Crystal City, Man., Canada, on May 4, 1912. Mourning his loss are son Henry and Margaret; daughter Elizabeth and Bob; grandchildren, Jennie, Katherine and James of England; brother Sherwood of Pilot Mound, Man., and sister Mildred McAulay of Morden, Man., Canada. Cousin Edith Stockdale (sister Elaine) of Toronto and the wider family are saddened by his passing. Fred was predeceased by Helen, his beloved wife of 54 years; brothers, Bert, Walter, Edward, Milton and Arthur; sisters, Ada, Eleanor and Marion and first grandchild John Howard Davey. Freds childhood and early working life were spent on the family farm. He later farmed at Glenella with his brothers. Fred and Arthur volunteered for the R.C.A. in 1939 and saw active service together in N. Africa, Italy, France and Belgium. In 1942 Fred married Helen Bridger. 1947 saw Fred, Helen and young son Henry move to Everdon, the birth of Elizabeth followed in 1951. Fred enjoyed quiet living in the English countryside. Fred and Helen were devoted to their home and garden, the many hours spent on renovations and improvements they regarded as labours of love. Fred and Helen were both active members of the United Reformed Church. Fred was a British Legion member and standard bearer. He was a voluntary fireman and blood donor. In England, Fred worked in engineering. In retirement, he enjoyed his workshop, particularly making fire bellows, and he relished any local tree work. Fred was held in high regard by family, friends and neighbours for his many acts of kindness and his quiet unassuming manner. Fred returned to Canada in 1946, in 1949 with Helen - (When Rev. Gilmour was a fellow passenger), in 1969, in 1998 with Henry and 1999 with Elizabeth. Sadly, his final months were marred by declining health. However his Canadian accent and in particular his "thank you maam" charmed his carers to the end. The cremation service was held on July 21. A memorial service is planned for August 5, when, following Freds wishes, his ashes will be scattered beneath an English oak. Safe Journeys to you.
