JOHN TSOURAS "Barba Yiannis" January 11, 1921 - August 5, 2000 With deepest sadness we announce the passing of our dear husband, father and grandfather, John Tsouras. "Papou" passed away on Saturday, August 5, 2000 at the age of 79. Born in Levedi, Greece, January 11, 1921, Papou immigrated to Canada in 1957 and brought his family the following year to join him. Johns sole purpose was to provide a better living for his young family. His sister Anna predeceased John. He will be greatly missed by his beloved wife of 51 years Panayiota (nee Groumoutis) who kept a loving vigil at his side; his sons, George (Linda), Gus (Barbara), Leo (Freda) his daughter Mary; his grandchildren, Jennifer, Jonathan, Jackelyn, Adam, Gianni, Dano, and Kosta. His Brother Thanasi and sisters, Katerini Papadonis and Eleni (Theofanis) Procopos from Levidi, Greece. His sister Aphrodite (Harry) from Pennsylvania, and sister Vassio of New York. His nephews, George and Leo Groumoutis; nieces, Vouli Gousgoula, Susan Groumoutis, Susan Danos (Greg). His brother-in-law Demos (Antigoni) Groumoutis, and dearest friends Tasso and Maria Apostolopoulos and family. John will be sadly missed by numerous other relatives and dear friends. John left Greece in 1957 to search for a better life for his young family and emigrated to his life long home of Winnipeg where he worked in the Thompson Inco Mines, Malcom Construction, and for 28 years until he retired at the age of 68 at MacDon Industries as a Welder. Johns greatest joy was his children and his grandchildren. He toiled great and hard to provide for his family. No task was too great, no challenge was impossible. John never knew the word "no". John was the epitome of "True Grit", our Hero. He was a very devoted man as a husband, father and grandfather. Through his life, John devoted his life in giving to his community and his church St Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church. He will be fondly remembered as "Barba Yianni" (Uncle John) at the Greek Summer Camp by many of the youth and Folkorama at the Greek Pavilion would not be the same without "Barba Yianni" cooking those delicious Souvlaki the last 18 years. John was devoted to his faith and his church. He very rarely missed his Sunday Service. He assisted with the service and served on the church board. Prayers will be said on Tuesday, August 8 at 7:00 p.m. in Thomson Funeral Chapels, 669 Broadway. Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, August 9 in St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, Grant at Shaftbury at 2:00 p.m. with Father Dimitrios Giannou officiating. Interment will follow in Brookside Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Leo and George Groumoutis, Jonathan and Adam Tsouras, Gregory Danos, and Nick Apostolopoulos. The family would like to express their deepest appreciation to Dr. Harris, the oncology and palliative care wards of the Grace Hospital for their care, compassion and attentive care given to our father. Also with great appreciation to Drs. Jowett and Richie and the VON Nursing Staff. In lieu of flowers, we ask that a donation be made in his memory to Cancer Care Manitoba, 100 Olivia Street, Winnipeg, MB., R3E 0V9 or The Childrens Wish Foundation, Manitoba Chapter, 350 St. Mary Ave. Winnipeg, Manitoba R3C 3J2. The family wishes to thank our friends for their visits, compassion and support during these difficult times and our time of need. Dad you have accomplished your goals, through your wisdom and values you taught us well. You have left a void in our lives, but we know that now you will rest well in Gods hands without pain. Love you Dad, always missed never forgotten. THOMSON FUNERAL CHAPELS 783-7211
