JOAN DARLENE WILKES (KROEKER) It is with extreme sadness that we announce the passing of Joan, on August 2, 2000. Born and raised in Winnipeg, Joan worked at the Winnipeg Data Centre from 1976 to 1980 and the Winnipeg Tax Centre from 1980 to October 1999, when illness prevented her working further. She had many cherished friends, you all know who you are, who were dear to her heart. Those who were fortunate enough to know Joan, quickly realized what a genuinely wonderful person she was. At work, wherever Joan went, peoples faces would light up when they saw her. She loved the company of friends during impromptu get-togethers after work. Joan loved to travel and sometimes would book a trip, usually to Las Vegas, on a whim when she saw a seat sale in the newspaper. A couple of years ago, she and her lunch crew all went to Vancouver for a "girls only" weekend to visit their buddy, Vi. Some of her best times were vacationing in Mazatlan, Mexico, where she met people who were quickly counted amongst her many best friends. Joan and husband Dave enjoyed visiting friends at their cottages during the summer months. She also had special memories of the baseball get-together over the years at Falcon, Victoria Beach, and at team members houses. On several occasions, Joan and Dave would slip away for a weekend, either alone or with friends to Grand Forks or Fargo, just to get away from everything. Joan always looked forward to Mondays, when son Todd had a standing invitation for supper. According to Todd, his mum was the best cook in the world. Many times he would go home with a doggie bag full of goodies. It was quite obvious that Joan had a great love and respect for her son, as did he for her. Joans family was very important to her and played a major role in her life. There was a time when she often travelled to the farm to visit her sister Julia and family, who she was very close to. She also had a special relationship with her older brother, Lloyd, and more recently with her younger brother, Richard. Over the years, Joan made many trips to Kansas City and to Columbus, Ohio, to see her brothers and their wonderful families. Joan was predeceased by her father Alex, and brother Carman. She will be sadly missed by husband and soul mate, Dave; by her beloved son Todd (Shannon) mother Kay (George) her sister Julia; and brothers, Lloyd (Dollie), Richard (Bonita) a very special Auntie Vi; son Scott (Karen) and daughter Kristen (Sean) on Daves side; and many nieces, nephews, and grand-children. A special thanks to the nurses and doctors in the Oncology Clinic at the St. Boniface Hospital and to the nurses on ward 3 B at the St. Boniface Hospital. When I come to the end of the road And the sun has set for me, I want no rites in a gloom filled room. Why cry for a soul set free? Miss me a little - but not too long, And not with your head bowed low, Remember the good times we once shared, Miss me - but let me go. In lieu of flowers, donations in Joans memory may be made to CancerCare Manitoba, 100 Olivia St., Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, August 8 at 10:00 a.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. An interment will follow in Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens and a reception will take place in the Chapel Lawn Reception Centre. Arrangements entrusted to: CHAPEL LAWN FUNERAL HOME CEMETERY AND CREMATORIUM 885-9715
