ALBERT E. (ABBY) HALLING Peacefully at Concordia Hospital in Winnipeg on August 1, 2000 in his 86th year. Knowing hard times, he enjoyed the good times and was a joy to his family and many friends and associates. Born in Winnipeg on Sept. 6, 1914, he excelled at serving the travelling public as a taxi driver for most of his working life. Starting with Veterans-Nash in 1947, Abby was a driver/owner for over 40 years, retiring from Unicity Taxi in 1987. Living in Fort Frances, Ontario for a brief period, he operated Hals Snack Bar featuring his famous Panchoburgers. Always a lover of music, he shared company with some of the citys best musicians in years past and kept abreast of current trends. He passed on this passion for music to the rest of his family. Abby will be greatly missed by his son Don (Cathy) and his grandchildren Kristine (James), Ted and Wyman. As well, he leaves his great-grandchildren Sydney and Justin, his first wife Gudrun, stepdaughter Doreen and family, and stepson Gerald and family. Other family members include Alice Young & family (Chilliwack), and Doug (Hazel) Young (Edmonton) and numerous cousins. Ab was predeceased by his parents Gertrude and George, beloved wife Olga, brother George, sister Lillian Lampe and cousin Harold Young. The family would like to extend thanks to Dr. Drexler and the staff at Concordia Hospitals Emergency and 3 East for the care and comfort they provided Abby during his final days. Special thanks as well to John and Hazel for their friendship, care and concern over the years. A Memorial Service will be held at Thomson Funeral Chapels, 669 Broadway Ave., at Furby St. at 2:00 p.m., Thursday Aug. 10. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the Kidney Foundation, the Cancer Society, or to the Manitoba Rett Syndrome Association, P.O. Box 24037, Wpg., MB, R3N 2B1.
