JOYCE MARIE SWIDNICKI (nee CRUICKSHANK) After a courageous battle with cancer, peacefully with her family at her side, on Monday, August 7, 2000 at the Portage District General Hospital, Joyce Marie Swidnicki passed away at the age of 54 years. She is predeceased by her husband Peter Swidnicki in 1993; and her parents Muriel and Harvey Cruickshank. Her memory will be cherished by her four children and grandchildren, Rhonda (Rick) Roy with new little granddaughter Randi Roy all of Portage, Sean (Mary-Anne) Swidnicki with granddaughters Hayley and Madeline Swidnicki all of Winnipeg; Janalee Swidnicki of Calgary and Kara Swidnicki of Winnipeg. Joyce also leaves her brothers, Ronald (Donna) Cruickshank of Hinton, Alberta and Donald (Terry) Cruickshank of Courtney, B.C.; her sister Barbara (Martin) Groombridge of Portage; her nieces and nephews, Warren Moffat, Shannon Cruickshank, Sherri Cruickshank, Wayne Cruickshank, Kelly Cruickshank, Craig Groombridge and Janet Groombridge; many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Joyce was born in Souris, Manitoba on April 17, 1946. She attended several elementary schools in small rural communities before her family settled in Portage, then attending Portage Collegiate Institute. On May 14, 1966 she married Peter and together started their home in rural Portage where Joyce made it her priority to be a homemaker and to raise their four children. Her doors were always open to friends and family alike. After raising her family, Joyces most important accomplishment, she then worked at Citi-Page from 1989 until she wasnt able to work anymore due to failing health in 1998. Joyce will be remembered as being kind, generous, giving and selfless in always putting others needs first. She was a member of the Trinity United Church, the Legion and the UCT (United Commercial Travellers). Joyce enjoyed a variety of activities like old time dancing, bowling, clogging, bingo, gardening, reading, travelling but her all-time favourite was being with her children and grandchildren. Service to Celebrate Joyces life will be held Thursday, August 10, 2000 at 1:30 p.m. at Trinity United Church with Rev. Ross Taylor officiating. A private family interment is to follow at Hillside Cemetery, Portage la Prairie. As expressions of sympathy, if friends so wish, donations may be made in Joyces memory to The Movement Centre of Manitoba Inc., 148 Redview Drive, Winnipeg, MB R3N 2C8 in honour of her granddaughters disability. A tree will be planted and cared for in memory of Joyce at Evergreen Memorial Gardens by McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel, who are entrusted with the arrangements.
