KATHLEEN ANNE LOUISA ALLEN (nee CHAPMAN) December 26, 1920 - August 6, 2000 Loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother passed away peacefully at the Norway House Indian Hospital on August 6, 2000 in her 80th year. She will be lovingly remembered by her husband and soul mate Dennis; her sons, Douglas (Florence) of Flin Flon, Patrick of Winnipeg, Kim (Cheryl) of Stonewall, Stephen of Thompson and her daughter Diane of Yellowknife; her brother Stan (Joyce) of Winnipeg and her sisters, Evelyn and Isabel and her many grandchildren, nieces, nephews and great-grandchildren and countless friends, in particular a very special and unique person, Lori Hart. Kay was predeceased by her daughter Launni and sons, Brad and Michael and her brother Frank. Kay was born in Toronto and spent her early years in Winnipeg where she attended school in St. James. After her marriage to Denny Allen in 1946 the family moved to various locations in Manitoba and eventually moved to Forestry Island at Norway House in 1951. Kay would become known as the hostess of Forestry Island and because of the number of Nurses, RCMP and Pilots who worked in the Norway House area she became known throughout that area of northern Manitoba. In addition she often entertained travelling dignitories who came to know her as a great artist and no doubt many of them have pictures that Kay painted during the years that she raised her family and worked at Norway House. For those who are fortunate enough to possess one or more of her paintings or sketches they will have those to remember her talent and graciousness. The artistic talent was used as a hobby that she and Denny undertook on behalf of a number of Archaeological researchers when Kay and Denny travelled by canoe on the many rivers of northern Manitoba where they would record, measure and sketch Rock Paintings that are disappearing because of changing water levels on these waterways. Obviously during those canoe trips Kay would do sketches of the landscape which would turn up as guides to pictures that she would paint when they returned to their base at Forestry Island. Kay had a passion for painting and drawing and music. Her love of plants and the outdoor life and its inhabitants, the animals, birds, bees and other creatures is witnessed in her compassion for people and nature and her vision of beauty in everything she saw which showed through her positive attitude that no one could match. Kay worked for the T. Eaton Company and during the war years she worked at S & S Aircraft Industries making airplane propellers. At Norway House she worked for both Environment Canada and the Department of Natural Resources. A memorial service has been held in Norway House on Wednesday, August 9. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held in Winnipeg on Friday, August 18. This memorial service will be held at St. Andrews Anglican Church, 2700 Portage Avenue, St. James at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, August 18. The family would like to extend our sincere thanks and appreciation to the Doctors and staff of the Norway House Indian Hospital. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Manitoba. God wanted another artist in heaven, so he chose you. Quietly and serenely the Mother Loon returns to her nest.

Condolences & Memories (8 entries)

  • I worked in Norway House from 1989 (the year of the great fires) to 1992. Kay was our office clerk, but way more than that. She was the bond for every NRO, Fire Ranger, Forester or natural resources person who ever graced her presence. Her and Denny were the most knowledgeable people I have ever met. They knew, and shared their memories of their time in the area and we were envious of their commitment to the land and each other. Her art work was famous amount conservation people and we cherish to this day, a water colour map she gave us when we transferred out. RIP wonderful and gracious lady. You are missed. - Posted by: Micheal Ward (Co-Worker, Friend, Admirer) on: Feb 07, 2016

  • We met Kaye and Denny in the early 1970's when we were stationed in God's Lake Narrows, Manitoba, with Natural Resources. Kay was the radio operator at Norway during the summer fire season and we talked to her every day. Janice had three paintings done by Kay, one the Bombardier Trail which is quite a well known scene, a waterfall scene from one of their trips on Aswapiswanan Lake and an autumn scene. All are on the walls of our home to this day. We always show them off and always make note of the three little birds flying in the top right hand corner of the painting which represent three little lives lost at Norway House. The two of them were very unique people to say the least and to know them was really an honor and a memory we carry very near to us.
