DR. MAURICE M. (MOE) PIERCE 1910 - 2000 Maurice (Moe) Pierce, age 90, passed away on Tuesday, August 8, 2000 at the Sharon Home with his family by his side. He is survived by Ethel, his wife of 65 years; his daughter and son-in-law Sheila and David Brodovsky; his grandchildren, Billy and Libby, Stephen and France, Sharon and Mauricio and Sidney and Cary; and his great-grandchildren, Jacob and Max, Alex and Joel, Talia, and Leah and Maren. he is also survived by his brother Jack; his sisters, Gertie Nepon and Brownie (Harold) Fleishman; sister-in-law Barbara Pierce; brother-in-law Jack Sherman and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers, Fred and Max, and sister Patty Sherman. Moe arrived in Winnipeg from Russia at the age of three, grew up in the north end and attended school in Winnipeg, graduating in medicine in 1935. He started as a country doctor in rural Saskatchewan and later trained in England to become and eye, ear, nose and throat specialist. When the Second World War broke out, he enlisted and served as a surgeon in Europe. Following the war, he returned to Winnipeg where he began his practice. He was involved in the medical community, chairing the MMS, the predecessor to medicare. He was the head of ENT at St. Boniface, Misericordia and Grace Hospitals and worked at Deer Lodge Hospital for 48 years. He touched many lives, both as a doctor and in his community involvement. He was a dynamic, charismatic individual who was respected as a caring family member, physician and friend. His door was always open. Everyone knew that they could stop by his home for advice, be it medical or otherwise. Moe was passionate about the symphony and the opera and served as presidents of both boards. He took great pleasure in being the personal physician to both local and visiting performers. He was a strong supporter of Israel and the local Jewish community. He had a long-standing friendship with Menachem Begin and his wife and in 1988 was honoured by the Ben-Gurion University. The importance of family was always stressed. "Zaida Moe" was thankful that he lived to see and enjoy his seven great-grandchildren. The family would like to thank Doreen Natividad, Paulina Trinidad and Virgie de Jesus, his companions for the last few years, who treated him with the utmost kindness and dignity. The family would also like to thank the staff of the 2nd and 4th floor of the Sharon Home. Funeral services were held at the Shaarey Zedek Synagogue on Thursday, August 10. Pallbearers were his three grandsons, Billy, Stephen and Sidney Brodovsky, his niece Ellen Fleishman and nephews, Jack Nepon and Sidney Dashefsky.
