Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryCHARLES IAN DRURY McDONALD Peacefully at home on Tuesday, August 15, 2000, after a lengthy illness. Ian was born in Winnipeg on December 31, 1916, elder son of John and Marion McDonald. Predeceased by his parents and his eldest sister Marion, he is survived by his wife Janet (Bunty) four sons and 11 grandchildren: Jock (Christine) and grandchildren, James, Shelagh and Stuart of Okoboji, Iowa, USA; James and grandchildren, Jennifer and Daniel of St. Albert, AB; Robert (Susan) and grandchildren, Dustin and Stephanie and step-grandchildren, Shashonnah and Gabriel Helbig of Thornbury, ON; Douglas (Alison) and grandchildren, Amy and Linsey of North Vancouver, BC. He is also survived by his brother Hugh of Winnipeg; and two sisters, Elizabeth Armytage of Winnipeg and Cynthia (Andrew) Hunter of London, ON; along with many cousins, nieces and nephews. Ian received his education Tuxedo Public School No. 2, St. Johns Ravenscourt and Ridley and the University of Manitoba. His studies were interrupted by the war when he first served as a civilian in the munitions plant at Valleyfield, Quebec, followed by enlistment in the army where he attained the rank of Captain. Following the war he was employed by Northern Wood Preservers in Port Arthur, ON, becoming manager of the Prince Albert, SK plant in 1950, then returning to Winnipeg in 1958 as President of McDonald Grain. On retiring, he returned to the University of Manitoba where he finished his B.A. at the age of 60, then his Master at the age of 69. Ians interests were diverse: while in Prince Albert he earned his pilots license, was president of the Canadian Club, Vice President of the Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce and delegate to General Synod of the Anglican Church. He became Chairman of the St. Johns College Council, was elected a Fellow of the College of Emmanuel - St. Chad of the University of Saskatchewan. He was a member of the Historical Society, St. Andrews Society, Winnipeg Power Squadron. Ian was an ardent sailor, being both past Commodore and a Judge of the Lake of the Woods International Sailing Association, and had been a member of the Zig Zag and Royal Lake of the Royal Lake of the Woods Yacht Clubs. The family would like to thank the homecare workers who made it possible for Ian to be at home. If desired in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Georges Memorial Fund or St. Johns College. A Celebration of Ians Life will be held on Friday, August 18 at 2:00 p.m. in St. Georges Anglican Church, Grosvenor and Wilton. The service will terminate at the church.
