ELIZABETH SUSAN SEMKIW (BUBBLES) With great sorrow, we announce the peaceful passing of Elizabeth Semkiw, on Monday, August 14, 2000 at Seven Oaks Hospital, at the age of 59 years. Left to cherish her memory are brothers, Boris and Borden (Helen) sister-in-law Stephanie (AB) numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her parents, William (1953) and Anna (1980) brothers, Paul (1982), Walter (1994), Ray (1997) sisters, Alice (1947), Sylvia (1929), Margaret (1984) and Mary Anne (1976). Elizabeth was born September 1, 1940 in Winnipeg. She was a very special person with great compassion, inner strength to keep going and accomplished so many things during her lifetime. In 1981 she was appointed to Social Services Advisory Committee and to the Appeal Panel for Home Care in 1994. In 1998 she was the Manitoba League of Persons with Disabilities Representative on the Handi Transit Policy Advisory Committee. She received the Award of Merit from Manitoba Canadian Paraplegic Association in 1979. In 1980 the YWCA Woman of the Year Award for Community Services. In 1982 she became a member of the Order of Canada and in 1992 received the Independent Living Resource Centre Award. She was also an accomplished artist. She enjoyed life, nature, music, live theatre, reading, loved animals and did some travelling. Even with her disability and numerous setbacks due to illness, she was a fighter and got on with her life. She was amazing and dedicated to whatever job she undertook. Her warmth, sincerity and sense of humour will be remembered by all those whose lives were touched by knowing her. The family would like to express their thanks to the nurses in I.C.U. at Seven Oaks Hospital. A special thank-you and sincere appreciation to Irene, Delphine, Bev and Margie for their love and care through the years and to all her caregivers. A funeral service will be held on Friday, August 18 at 11:00 a.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery, 4535 Main St. Pallbearers will be Bob, Bill and Gary Semkiw, Leo Hiebert, Bill Mahara and Lou Martel. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations may be made in Elizabeths memory to the Humane Society, 5 Kent St., Winnipeg, MB R2L 1X3, or charity of choice. Well Miss You ..
