IRENE SCHERZA (1918 - 2000) With deepest sorrow we announce the passing of Irene Scherza after a brief illness. Having suffered a severe stroke on August 12, the day of her 82nd birthday, Mom died peacefully at the Selkirk General Hospital on August 18, 2000. Irene leaves to cherish her memory, her husband Norman of 60 years; son Don (Lynn), granddaughters, Tracy (Guy) Mielke, Alexandria, Morgan, Kelly (Greg), Terry (Derrick) Green, Danielle, Tyler, Rhett, Toni (Chris) Barthell, Cassandra, Brandon; Kristi (Bruce) Backland all of Spokane, Wa; granddaughters, Tammy and Theresa; sister Cecilia (Elliott) Smith, Kenneth; in-laws, Marion Tegg, Emily Stock, Martha Stock of Brandon, Chuck and Anne Scherza of Rhode Island, U.S.A., John and Margaret Kindrat of Selkirk and many nieces and nephews in Poland, U.S.A. and Manitoba in addition to many other friends. She was predeceased by a son Kenneth in infancy; son Dennis in 1985; brother Mike Smith; a special nephew George Smith in addition to parents and siblings in her homeland of Poland. Mom worked hard throughout her entire life and after retiring from their family business she derived much pleasure from tending to her home and garden until debilitating health problems prevailed. She will be fondly remembered for her love of children, her generous and giving manner and her passions for rearranging furniture and shopping. In accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held on Monday, August 21 at 1:30 p.m. in the Gilbart Funeral Home with Pastor Terry Throndson officiating. A private family interment will be held at the St. Clements Cemetery. Flowers are gratefully declined. If so desired, donations may be made in Irenes memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, 301 - 352 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB, R3B 2H9 or to the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church Building Fund, 6088 P.T.H. 9A South Main St., Selkirk, Man. The family would like to express their sincere thanks to the medical and nursing staff at the Selkirk General Hospital and to the homecare personnel. In tears we saw you sinking, We watched you fade away You suffered much in silence, You fought so hard to stay, You faced your task with courage, Your spirit did not bend, But still you kept on fighting Until the very end. We love you Mom. Rest in Peace. Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk, in care of arrangements.
