LUCILLE PATRICIA SCINOCCA Peacefully, on Friday, August 18, 2000, with family by her side, after a long and courageous battle with cancer, Lucille Scinocca passed away at the age of 52. Lucille was predeceased by her father Mike in 1993 and by her mother Mary in 1997. She is survived by her husband Victor Nye; sister Antoinette Scinocca; brothers, Frank (Mary Kay), John (Donna) and their families; mother-in-law Jean Melnyk; stepson Dale Nye (Tammy) and family; aunts, Ann Masotti, Rose Sutherland, and Marge Scinocca; plus many special nieces, nephews, cousins, and great-nephews. Lucille was born in Winnipeg June 29, 1948, at the old Grace Hospital, and moved to Brandon with her family in 1949. She attended Fleming and Earl Oxford Schools. At the age of 12, after undergoing heart surgery at Health Sciences Centre, she dreamed of becoming a nurse like the ones that had nursed her for so many weeks. She studied music and purchased her own Hammond Organ which she loved to play at home. In 1967, she graduated from Brandons Vincent Massey High School, and received her R.N. from the Brandon School of Nursing in 1972. She worked at the Brandon General Hospital and at Beacon Hill Lodge in Winnipeg, where she became a Head Nurse. Throughout her nursing career, she pursued another dream, and trained as a competitive ballroom dancer under Canadian Dance Champions, Joris and Penny Bedeau of Dance City in Winnipeg, and later, Vancouver, where the studio had relocated. She competed at a Gold Standard in major centers throughout North America, and performed with Winnipeg dance professional Gary Lenko for numerous showcases and local charities. Many of her dance colleagues remained close friends throughout her life. Yet another childhood dream inspired her to return to studies, and in 1984, she received a Bachelor of Education from the University of Manitoba. In 1985 she began teaching for the St. James-Assiniboia School Division and worked at Bannatyne, Stevenson, and Athlone Schools. Following teaching engagements at the Starlite and Iberville Colonies, she returned to St. James as an Educational Assistant at Buchanan School, and a Student Assistant at Buchanan and Strathmillan Schools. For many years she tutored children in reading, writing, and math, through Partners For Learning. Lucy had a phenomenal impact on the students that she worked with, and parents would continually comment on the difference she had made in their childrens lives. For many years, along with her teaching commitments, her love for caring for others continued as a Homecare Attendant with the VON. Undaunted by the struggles of her own illness, she inspired anyone who was ill by her positive attitude, her laughter, and genuine caring heart. She will be remembered by the thousands of people whose lives she touched throughout her life. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 24 at Holy Rosary Church, 510 River Ave., Winnipeg. Viewing 30 minutes prior to Mass. Interment will follow at Assumption Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Joseph Masotti, Peter Mignacca, Paul Mignacca, David Scinocca, Paul Scinocca (godchild), and Derek Scinocca (godchild). Sincere thanks to the 5th floor nursing staff at Grace Hospital. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Lucys memory may be made to the Humane Society; CancerCare at Grace Hospital; or to People Against Cancer, 604 East St., P.O. Box 10, Otho, Iowa, U.S.A. 50569 (a non-profit, public benefit organization dedicated to new directions in the "war on cancer").
