RUSSELL WILKOWICH December 29, 1929- August 22, 2000 On Tuesday, August 22, 2000, at the Selkirk General Hospital, Russell Wilkowich, aged 70 years, of Selkirk, succumbed to a battle with cancer, but was always surrounded by his family. Russell is survived by his beloved wife Shirley of 44 years; daughter Sherryl (Ian) Fey and their children, Karl and Kierstin of Selkirk; son Randy (Kimberlynn) Wilkowich and his children, Kelsey and Logan and their mother Michelle of Texas; brother Walter (Margaret) Wilkowich and their children, Kim (Barb) Riley, Rory and McMillian of Okotoks, Alta., Loree (Glen) Gillet and Piers and Perrie of Australia. He was predeceased by his parents John and Eva Wilkowich and his stepfather John Gallas. Russ owned and operated Daerwood Press in Selkirk for over 41 years, making many friends along the way. He treasured time spent with his children, grandchildren and family. We will all miss him deeply. He spent many enjoyable days during the years with friends and associates at the Knights of the Round Table and the Sportsmen at the Royal Canadian Legion. Russ was recognized as a premier mushroom picker who loved working his flower beds and vegetable garden - his specialty being tomatoes. In the latter years he enjoyed cooking and baking which he loved to share with family and friends. "God saw him getting tired and A cure was not to be, so He Put His arms around him and Whispered,"Come to Me." With tearful eyes we watched him Suffer and saw him fade Away, although we loved Him dearly, we could not Make him stay. A golden heart stopped Beating, hard working hands to rest. God broke our hearts to Prove to us, He only takes the Best." Cremation has taken place and prayers will be said on Thursday, August 24, at 7:00 p.m. in the Gilbart Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Friday, August 25, at 2:30 p.m. in the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Selkirk with Pastor Terry Throndson officiating. The family wishes to express their sincere thanks for the kindness and care extended to our husband, father and Gigi during his hospital stay. Also thank you to Dr. Fuchs and the medical ward at the Selkirk General Hospital who maintained a vigil to care and comfort him. Flowers are gratefully declined; should friends so desire, donations in memory of Russell may be made to CancerCare Manitoba, 100 Olivia St., Winnipeg, Man., R3E 0V9.
