GEORGE RAYMOND CARTER 1937- 2000 With deep sadness, we announce that after a courageous battle with cancer George passed away peacefully at Riverview Health Centre on Friday, August 25, 2000 at the age of 63 years. Dearly beloved husband of Diane and devoted father to Jeremy, George was also blessed with daughter Linda (son-in-law Glenn Haberstock) from a prior marriage. He is survived by brothers, Ralph (Irene) of Kitchener, Ont. and Jim (Glenda) of Winnipeg; parents-in-law, Les and Dorothy Garrett and Alex Glena of Winnipeg, Peter and Anne Kolochuk of Dauphin, Man., brother-in-law Dave Garrett (Gail) of Calgary, Alberta as well as many special aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, friends and acquaintances. George was predeceased by his parents James Carter and Christina Hamlyn. George was born in Toronto, Ontario on August 14, 1937. He left home at an early age and completed his education while serving in the navy. George had many jobs throughout the years but being in sales was his passion and natural talent. He was currently employed with Skillcraft Renovation Specialists as a sales representative. George was a friendly, outgoing individual with a great sense of humour. He was very goal oriented and always strived to improve himself. George always displayed a positive attitude and was an inspiration to all throughout his illness. George was well known in the St. James area. He will best be remembered for his six year long fight to raise funds for an addition to Silver Heights Community Centre. The new multi-purpose room was dedicated in his honour as Carter Hall. He was also keenly interested in municipal politics and ran a close race in recent civic elections. Georges volunteerism was an integral part of his life. His efforts were recognized with the City of Winnipeg Merit Award, the Government of Canada Merit Award, and the Premiers Volunteer Service Award. George was the chairman of the Residents Advisory Group and was also elected to the Board of Child and Family Services. George was a caring, generous, supportive man who put his family first at all times. He loved spending time at his cottage, gardening, finding treasures at garage sales, fishing, and playing Scrabble. Fond memories include his deep sea fishing adventure in Barbados with his son Jeremy. Georges one wish was to live long enough to see Jeremy graduate from law school next year. George will be truly missed by his black labrador Hoover Anne and forever remembered in the hearts of those he touched. Sincere thanks are extended to all of Georges compassionate caregivers both at the Victoria General Hospital and at the Riverview Health Centre. Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations in Georges memory may be made to The Rainbow Society, 302-171 Donald Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3C 1M4 or Cancer Care Manitoba, 100 Olivia Street, Room 109, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3E 0V9. Cremation has taken place. A service of remembrance will be held on Tuesday, August 29 at 3:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. Interment and reception will follow.
