HARRY JOHN GIBBINGS With deep sadness, we announce that after a courageous battle with Parkinson Disease, Harry passed away peacefully at Meadowood Manor Nursing Home on Sunday, August 27, 2000 at the age of 86. He will be greatly missed by his devoted wife Jean of nearly 50 years; daughters, Barbara (Jacob) and Judy (Kriss) and grandchildren, Darren (fiancee Tammy), Michael, Matthew and Patrick. He was predeceased by all his brothers and sisters. Harry was born January 18, 1914 at Lakeland, MB where he lived until he enlisted with the Canadian Army and went overseas, seeing battle in Italy and Northern Africa. After the war ended, Harry returned to Winnipeg, where he learned auto body painting, a trade he remained working at until retirement at age 65. Dad was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion No. 16 and received his 30 year Veterans pin which he wore with pride. Mom and Dad enjoyed many wonderful trips together, Hawaii was a particular favourite, as well as the various places his daughter Barbara and her family lived. Dad spent many enjoyable weekends at the cottage at Brereton, Hillside and Grindstone where he excelled at lawn darts and could never be beaten! He loved to fish and spent quiet times sitting in his lawn chair at the lake. He loved his grandsons and was very proud of them. Harry was a kind, humble, gentle man, liked by all who had the privilege to meet him. While he suffered for many years, he never complained. Mom never left his side, caring for him over the many years his health deteriorated, enabling them to live and love together for as long as they did. Sincere thanks are extended to all of Harrys compassionate care givers at Meadowood Manor. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held on Thursday, August 31 at 2:00 p.m. at Neil Bardal Inc., 984 Portage Ave., entrance off Aubrey Street with Rev. Dennis Butcher officiating. Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations in Harrys memory may be made to the Parkinson Foundation of Canada.
