Date of Passing: Aug 22, 2000
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryALBERT G. BRAUN On August 22, 2000 after a lengthy illness, our husband, father, grandfather, and brother, passed away at Riverview Centre at the age of 62. He will be sadly missed and remembered by his wife Marlene; daughter Lisa of Calgary, her children, Kristin and James, and special friend Scott Bryne; son Carl of Winnipeg, and his wife Trish (Hedlund). He is survived also by two sisters and two brothers. He was predeceased by his parents. Born in 1937 in Winkler, MB, Albert was the eldest son of George and Nettie Braun, and was raised on their farm in the community of Hochstadt near Altona. Even as a child, he loved reading and studying, and when he was 16, completed high school and went on to earn a B.A. degree at Bethel College in Kansas; an M.A. at the University of Arkansas; and a B.Ed. at the University of Manitoba. In 1959, he began teaching English literature at the high school in his home town of Altona. As well, he conducted choirs, both in school and at the United Church. It was during those years that he met and married local girl Marlene Epp. In 1967, they moved to Fort Richmond in Winnipeg, where they raised their two children, while Albert continued his career at Dakota Collegiate in St. Vital. Teaching was his life, and he taught well. But in 1998, after 39 years in the profession, his failing health compelled him to retire earlier than he had planned. An avid patron of the arts, Alberts great loves were poetry and Shakespeare, classical music, theatre, and film. All who knew him were profoundly influenced by his passion for and his devotion to literature. He mentored many a student in the art of writing, and took a genuine yet quiet pride and pleasure in their intellectual achievements. Although a challenging man to know, those who loved him found a philosophical nature, a sensitive and restless spirit, and above all, a brave heart. He spent his life searching for the symbols, and creating the symbolic acts, that would define his journey. A memorial service for Albert G. Braun will be held Saturday, September 2 at 2:30 p.m. at the Fort Garry United Church, 800 Point Rd. There will also be a brief ceremony for the interment of his ashes at Figengrund Cemetery, three and one quarter miles east of Altona (Rd. 7 North), on Sunday, September 3 at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation. The family would like to thank Dr. Hayward, and the staff of the Victoria and Misericordia Hospitals and the Riverview Health Centre, for their care of Albert through his illness. Wiebe Funeral Home Altona (204-324-5404) in care of arrangements.
