SARAH B. WEISMAN (nee HAMOVICH) On Monday, August 28, 2000, Mrs. Sarah Weisman passed away peacefully, aged 104 years, at the Sharon Nursing Home, surrounded by her family. Sarah Weisman will always be lovingly remembered by her daughter and son-in-law, Roslyn and Meyer Silver; her son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Harvey and Sandra Weisman; her grandchildren, Roberta and Larry Hurtig, Nancy and Barry Corey, Vivian Silver and Lewis Zeigen (Israel), Rochelle and Mati Gamliel, Neil and Jemmie Silver (Calgary), Nancy Weisman (Toronto), Dr. Karen Weisman and Dr. Arthur Ripstein (Toronto) her fifteen great-grandchildren; one great-great grandson, and her youngest brother and sister-in-law, Ralph and Clara Hamovich and her son-in-law Louis Slutchuk, as well as many nephews, nieces, great nephews and great nieces. She was predeceased by her husband Jack (1967) her daughter Fay Slutchuk (1984) her sister Rae Ditlove, and her brothers Victor, Jules and Louis Hamovich. Sarah Weisman was born in 1896 in Romania and came with her parents and siblings to Winnipeg in 1908. At the age of 12 she began work at Dysons Pickle Factory becoming forelady at 13 years old. She married Jack Weisman in 1916 in Winnipeg and together they operated Weismans Confectionery at Main and Higgins for the next 51 years. They were both active in their Synagogues, the Knesseth Israel at Stella and Charles St., and later at the Ashkenazie Shule. Mrs. Weisman later joined and became a life member of the Chavurat Tefila Synagogue. Sarah Weisman was one of the founders of the Knesseth Israel Sisterhood in 1922, a charity organization which became part of the Jewish Welfare Fund, forerunner of the Combined Jewish Appeal. Mrs. Weisman was also a life member of the Jewish Child and Family Service, delivering Moess Chittim parcels at Pesach time for many years by car, as she was one of the first women in Winnipeg to drive a car. She was also an ardent worker for Bnai Brith Women serving as president of the chapter and attending many of their conventions in her 80s, and was named Woman of the Year for that organization. Funeral services were held August 29, at the Chesed Shel Emes with Rabbi A. Green officiating with long-time friend David Diamond as cantor. Her granddaughters, Nancy Weisman, Rochelle Gamliel and Vivian Silver (via e-mail) also read eulogies in her memory. Interment followed at the Shaarey Zedek Cemetery. Pallbearers were her grandsons, Neil Silver, Mati Gamliel, great-grandsons, Tiram Gamliel, Jack Hurtig, great nephew Jonathan Buckwold and family friend Dr. Alan Gutkin. Sincere thanks to Marta Rivera, personal companion to Mrs. Weisman, whose compassionate care helped make her last several years comfortable and dignified. Special thanks also to the staff at the Sharon Home, Sandy Blatt, Jane Push, and Anne, Lydia, Diane, Kathy, Ferne, Carol and companions Paula, Anna, Nina and Vera.
