DONALD E. SMITH March 13, 1931 - September 2, 2000 It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Donald E. Smith, aged 69, at the Health Sciences Centre on Saturday, September 2, 2000. Peacefully, surrounded by his family, he passed away after a brief illness. He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years Sonia; beloved son Don (Lisa) daughter-in-law Karen; grandsons, Jared, Kirk and Addison. He will be sadly missed by his sister-in-law Margaret Waytowich; nephew James; brother and sister-in-law, Victor and Vienna Steciuk; niece Candace (David) and nephew Rich (Sue) and their families, as well as numerous other relatives. Don was born and raised in Calgary, Alta. He then joined the Royal Canadian Horse Artillery and served in the Korean War. Soon after his discharge, he became employed at Canada Post Corp., where he worked his way up to a Supervisory position, which he held until his retirement in 1991. Since that time, he has devoted most of his time to his beloved grandsons, Jared and Kirk, babysitting and being involved with their sports and school activities. He was a huge part of their lives and they adored him. Don was predeceased by his father Harold; mother Ida; brother Mervin and brother-in-law and comrade Ernie Waytowich. Don lived life to the fullest, and was always eager to lend a helping hand to anyone who needed him. He made friends easily and then always kept them for a lifetime. He also loved spending time at the family cottage at Winnipeg Beach, woodworking, visiting neighbours and teaching Jared and Kirk how to "measure twice and cut once". Our family would like to thank the many people who cared for Don with tremendous compassion and devotion, including Dr. D. Miller, Dr. N. Ahmed, Dr. M. Goytan, Dr. Warren and the nursing staff and unit assistants of GA5 Health Sciences Centre. A Funeral Service to celebrate Dons life will be held on Wednesday, September 6 at 11:00 a.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St. at Luxton Avenue in Winnipeg. Bishop Stefan Soroka will be officiating. Interment will follow at Winnipeg Beach Community Cemetery at approximately 3:00 p.m. Pallbearers will be James Waytowich, Buzz (Lawrence) Thomas, Duncan Remnant, Rich Nowell, David Skromeda and Doug Binda. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Dons memory to CancerCare Manitoba Foundation, 100 Olivia St., Winnipeg, Manitoba R3E 9Z9. "God saw you getting tired, When a cure was not to be, So He closed His arms around you And whispered "Come to Me." You didnt deserve what you went through, So He took you home to rest. Gods garden must be beautiful, For He only takes the best." Rest in peace, dear Husband and Dad. Grandpa, well miss you. Cropo Funeral Chapel in care of arrangements 586-8044.
