ETHEL PAULINE SURMA (PONTIUS) July 2, 1930 - September 2, 2000 It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of our dearly beloved mother, grandmother and aunt on Saturday, September 2, 2000 at the age of 70. Mom was born in Winnipeg on July 2, 1930. She was predeceased by her husband Joseph Jack; parents, Chester and Opal Pontius; three sisters, Lavina, Inez, Anna; two brothers, Ira and Chester Jr. Left to mourn are her son Chester/Butch (Wendy) daughter Joyce (Bill) Horvath; grandchildren, Amanda and Corey; numerous nieces, nephews, and many friends who called her "Mom" and "Grandma". Mom had spent her early years on the farm in the Faulkner area where she tended and rode her horse Queeny. Mom was employed as a waitress and seamstress in her early years and then as a painters helper/receiver at Progressive Manufacturing for 30 years. Residing in Kildonan, Mom became active in the Kildonan Womens Auxiliary and the Community Centre. Mom had many hobbies: gardening, ceramics and bead work. She enjoyed swimming, playing cards, crafts or having lunch with her many friends. She also loved to travel. Many joyous times were spent surrounded by family here in Winnipeg, Saskatoon and Missouri. Moms effervescent personality and happy go lucky nature endeared her to all the lives she touched. We wish to thank the VON and homecare for their compassionate care of Mom. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of ones choice. Visitation will be held on Friday, September 8, between 7:00 and 8:30 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St. Cremation will follow. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 9, at 11:00 a.m., also at Cropo Chapel, with Rev. Brenda Fraser officiating. Interment will follow in the Kildonan Presbyterian Cemetery. Cropo Funeral Chapel in care of arrangements 586-8044.
