M. ALVA MARNER On Thursday, September 7th, 2000, M. Alva Marner, aged 81 years, peacefully at home. Predeceased by her parents, Clifford and Elizabeth Newell; daughter Dana and cousin Joan Horner. Left to mourn her passing are her aunt, Lillian Phizacklea; cousins, Allan (Shirley) Phizacklea; cousin-in-law Gordon Horner, both of Winnipeg and Dorothy Sanderson of Calgary; son-in-law John (Cheryl) Healey; many second cousins and an extended "family of close and dear friends, many of whom she kept in touch with every day. In her professional career, Alva worked in real estate and property management for many years, retiring at 65. She was a lifetime member of the Imperial Order of Daughters of the Empire, acting as their Treasurer for many years. She travelled extensively, visiting France, England and many parts of the U.S., with her daughter and Aunt Vera, and had always harboured a desire to visit the Funcelles Islands off the coast of Africa, simply because they sounded like "fun". That word was used many times a day by Alva. No matter when you phoned her, she had always had friends who had taken her out shopping, been playing bridge, driving her car or simply talking with friends on the phone every day, she told you that she had had "fun". Retirement was an extremely active time for her, especially where sports were concerned. An avid watcher of football and curling, she also enjoyed baseball. You could always count on her for the "colour commentary" on a game. But you didnt dare phone her when General Hospital or the Young and the Restless were on. One of her proud accomplishments was her Bridge Club that, with approximately the same players, regularly got together every week. They had recently celebrated over 50 years together. We greatly admired her loyalty to her friends and her loving personality. She was always someone you could confide in, dream with, hope through and receive excellent advice from. She was thoughtful and generous, always remembering the events in her "familys" life. Honoured pallbearers will represent all facets of her diverse life. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, September 13 at 1:00 p.m. in Thomson Funeral Chapel, 669 Broadway, officiated by Rev. Cliff McMillan of Shaughnessy United Church. Interment will follow in St. James Cemetery, Portage Avenue. In lieu of flowers, friends so wishing may make donations in her name to the Canadian Diabetes Association, #102 - 310 Broadway Avenue, Winnipeg, MB. R3C 0S6 She will be missed by all that knew her. She greatly enriched our lives and for that we are thankful to have known her. THOMSON FUNERAL CHAPELS 783-7211
