SARA SIMOVITCH Surrounded and comforted by her children, Sara Simovitch passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 7, 2000, at the Victoria General Hospital. She was predeceased by her loving husband Isaac and her dear brother Phil Feldman. She is survived and mourned by her sisters, Gert (Sam) Moldave of Las Vegas, Nevada, Sylvia (Manny) Gurstein of Vancouver, B.C.; brother Ralph (Marlene) Feldman of Tarzana, California and sisters-in-law, Birdie Feldman of Los Angeles, California and Fanny Simovitch of Calgary, Alta. She will be forever remembered, heart and soul, by her children, Sandra (Dr. Ean) Battel of Winnipeg and Dr. Harvey (Rona) Simovitch of Miami, Florida; her loving grandchildren, Ashley Battel of Winnipeg, Audra (Jeffrey) Simovitch Bovarnick of Boston, Massachusetts, Drs. Loren (Robert) Simovitch Lins of Denver, Colorado and Dr. Ryan Simovitch of North Carolina; her great-grandchildren, Jaclyn and Jarret Bovarnick and many nieces and nephews. Sara was born in Winnipeg on March 8, 1915, to Rose and Isaac Feldman, two very special and nurturing parents. Her education was obtained at Machray and St. Johns high schools while she vigorously pursued excellence in music, especially piano, achieving Royal Conservatory of Music status. Shortly thereafter, Sara met and married Isaac Simovitch, a handsome, kind and compassionate gentleman. Together they were married for 56 years. Their devotion, dedication and civility to each other set an exemplary standard of marriages for their children, Sandra and Harvey. Sara had a close-knit family. Gert, Sylvia, Ralph, Phil and their spouses Sam, Manny, Marlene and Birdie have played a very significant and dominant role in her life. They were always doting on their eldest sister, joking with her and including her in family functions, both near and far. Sara was an active participant and leader in the Rebecca Sieff chapter of Hadassah, and until her recent hospitalization, she was an enthusiastic participant in Stay Young and the Shaarey Zedek Adult Leisure activities. She was truly loved by all. Her radiance, kindness, attention to detail, presence, beauty - both external and internal - and smile were endearing. Her exceptionally strong will, determination, perseverance and love of life, even in the wake of a terrible life-threatening fall, the tragic loss of an eye to melanoma 27 years ago, and in her most recent battle with cancer, were greatly admired. Her children, Sandra and Harvey and their spouses, Ean and Rona, were especially privileged to receive her knowledge, inspiration, warm touch and infectious optimism. Funeral services were held graveside at the Shaarey Zedek Cemetery on Sunday, September 10, with Rabbi A. Green officiating and Rabbi L. Berkal as cantor. Saras sisters, Gert Moldave and Sylvia Gurstein, also read eulogies in her memory. Pallbearers were Zivey Feldman, Alan Feldman, Robert Feldman, David Golub, Dr. Arnold Kapitz and Ralph Melnicer. Honorary pallbearers were Manny Gurstein and Sam Moldave. A special thank you to the doctors and nurses on the fifth floor of Victoria Hospital, and to Shirley of Medox Health Services. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Saras memory to CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, Man., R3E 0V9.
