JOHN (JACK) WALTER PAGE February 13, 1916 - September 19, 2000 Following a bravely-fought battle with cancer and its post-operative complications, our beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather, John (Jack) Walter Page passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 19, 2000 at St. Boniface General Hospital at the age of 84. Jack was predeceased by his wife Florence (Florrie) in March 1994 after almost 55 years of marriage. He is survived, and remembered with love and pride, by his sons, Brian (Ann), Colin (Linda) and Roger (Louise) grandchildren, Karen (Ken) Wyryha, Kelvin (Marguerite), Kent, Lee, Stephen (Liz) and Susan; great-grandchildren, Adrian Page; Tiana Wyryha and Jordan Page and in England, brother Douglas (Joan) and sisters, Jean (Ted) Sharman, Lilian Hatton and Vera (Ernie) Jenkins. Jack was born in Folkestone, England on February 13, 1916. He married Florrie on April 10, 1939 and the two of them moved to Gillingham (Kent), England, where they lived for 43 years before coming to Canada in 1982 to spend their retirement years with their children and grandchildren, who had moved to Winnipeg several years earlier. From June 1940 to December 1944, Jack served in the Second World War as a nurse in the Royal Army Medical Corps, seeing duty in North Africas western desert, Egypt, Syria, Ceylon, India and Burma. After the war, Jack joined Waltons Surgical Appliance Company and spent most of the remainder of his career managing the local branch. Jack was a very private, unassuming man who, to the end, remained the epitome of self-reliance and determination. Well-liked and respected by all who knew him, Jack was content with lifes simple pleasures. He could often be seen tending his small garden, or shuffling around Transcona with his walker. He took pride in his extensive stamp collection, the result of a lifelong passion for the hobby. In Jacks final months, however, his greatest pride was in his three great-grandchildren. What joy they brought him during this difficult time. Jack had been a member of the Transcona Legion since 1982. "Wednesday Night Darts" has lost one of its most loyal supporters. The family wish to express their sincere thanks to Dr. Hugh Taylor and the doctors and nursing staff of the Surgical Intensive Care Unit and the 7th Floor West at St. Boniface General Hospital. Your efforts were greatly appreciated and will long be remembered. If friends so desire, donations in Jacks memory may be made to the Manitoba Lung Association, the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, or the St. Boniface General Hospital Research Foundation. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held on Friday, September 22 at 2:30 p.m. at GREEN ACRES FUNERAL CHAPEL, Hwy #1 East at Navin Road. Interment will follow, reuniting Jack and Florrie in the Columbarium at Green Acres Memorial Gardens.
