LISTER CAVENDISH NEVILE Lister Cavendish Nevile passed away at the Grace Hospital, Winnipeg, September 22, 2000 aged 89 years. He was predeceased by a son Martin (Maryann). He was born in Wapella, Sask., August 22, 1911, the only child of Henry Nevile and Phoebe Stant. Lister spent his early years in Wapella and Brandon, where he received his education. After graduating, he joined the Imperial Bank of Canada in Brandon. He was transferred to Winnipeg in 1933 and to Sioux Lookout in 1935. He was instrumental in opening a new branch of the bank in Hudson in 1936 and remained there until 1941. It was there that he met his future wife Jean McKay. They were married June 10, 1941 in Winnipeg. He became active in the Canadian Army Militia in 1928 and volunteered for duty in 1942. In 1943 Lister was sent overseas with the Winnipeg Light Infantry as a Lieutenant. He saw combat duty in Italy and was wounded. After being hospitalized in England, he returned to Canada in 1946 and was discharged. He returned to the banking profession and was assigned to Meadow Lake, Portage La Prairie, Riverton, Gimli, Neepawa and Winnipeg Elmwood Branch until his retirement in 1976. He then worked part-time for the Canadian Corps of Commissionaires. Lister was an accomplished musician, at one time considered one of the top tenor banjo players in Western Canada. He was an avid reader and among his other interests were gardening, carpentry, furniture refinishing, choral and barbershop singing, square dancing, the family cottage at Glen Bay and in his later years learning about quantum physics. He rarely missed his Tuesday meetings with the Outlook Club in Winnipeg. He was active in both the Lutheran and United Churches. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, September 26 at 11:00 a.m. in the Gimli Lutheran Church with Pastor George Johnson presiding. Viewing will take place one hour prior to service time.
