JOHN BIRNIE Peacefully, following a lengthy illness, it is with sadness that we announce the death of John Birnie on Sunday, September 24, 2000 at the Misericordia Hospital, at the age of 87 years. John was predeceased by his wife Beda (Boquist) of 43 years, on September 18, 2000, his brother Tom, sister Mina, father and mother, James and Willmina Birnie. John was born in Winnipeg and was employed at Emco and Grinnells in the plumbing supply business. He attended Isaac Brock School and resided at his parents home on Valour Road, until his marriage to Beda where they resided on Spruce Street for 43 years. John enjoyed extensive travel with his wife and they loved family get-togethers for picnics, weddings and reunions. Johns passions in sports were golf, curling and lawn bowling. He was very active at the Thistle Curling rink and served as treasurer for many years. In his younger days he also enjoyed skiing and was a member of the Winnipeg Ski Club. John served in the Second World War in the Military Police (Provost Corps). While John and Beda did not have children of their own, they were the favourite aunt and uncle of numerous nieces and nephews, including Norma and Gordon Patterson, who enjoyed their closeness as mother and father figures. They also enjoyed friends and neighbours, especially their children. A combined celebration of Johns and Bedas lives was held on Thursday, September 18, in anticipation of Johns subsequent passing and therefore no additional funeral service will be held. If friends so desire, donations in Johns memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, 301-352 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB R3B 2H8.
