HERBERT HUTCHINSON February 4, 1922 - September 23, 2000 Peacefully at Deer Lodge Centre, Herb Hutchinson passed away on Saturday, September 23, 2000. Herbs memory will be cherished by his children, Linda (Ken) Stratton of Whitby, ON, Trevor (Gisele) of Lorette, MB; grandchildren, Neil (Lisa) of Keswick, ON, Arlene of Whitby, Andrea and Lindsay of Lorette; sister Mary Hutchinson; sister-in-law Betty McIntosh; brothers-in-law Bob, Joe (Jean), and Jim (Jean) Smith, and Eldon Glenn. Herb was predeceased by his loving wife of 55 years, Helen, and infant son Herbie. Herb was born in Ninette, MB and moved to Winnipeg at the age of seven. He lived in Elmwood until joining the R.C.A.F. in 1940 as an airframe mechanic. He served in Canada and overseas until being discharged as a Sergeant in 1946. Herb worked with Canadian Pacific Airlines for three years. He started working with Winnipeg Electric Co. (Winnipeg Transit) in 1949 where he worked until retirement in 1982. Herbs career at Transit started as a sheet-metal worker and progressed to Body Shop Foreman and Supervisor of Building Maintenance. Herb lived in Charleswood since 1948 where he was very active in the community. He helped establish and build Roblin Park Community Club, serving on the Executive, coaching house league hockey, and playing Old Timer Hockey. Herb helped build Charleswood United Church where he was Sunday School Superintendent for 15 years, sang in the Senior Choir for 20 years, and served on most committees. Herb loved life and enjoyed a challenge. His hobbies included piloting his own plane, volunteering with the Air Cadet Program of Glider Training in Rivers, scuba diving in Florida and Hawaii, golfing, curling, bowling, travelling, and camping. Herb also loved music and enjoyed playing the Hawaiian guitar and the organ. He was a lifetime member of Industrial Management Clubs of Canada and served on the National Council. After retirement, he was a member of Lodge No. 163 A.F. and A.M., Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, was a member of Khartum Temple of the Shrine, and a member of the Portage Motor Patrol. Herb was a true gentle man and his interest and concern for others was especially reflected in the love for his children and grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, September 27 at Charleswood United Church, 4820 Roblin Blvd. at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Michael Wilson officiating. A gathering of family and friends will follow at church. The family wish to thank the staff of T4, Deer Lodge Centre for making Dad a part of their "family" and their care and concern to us all during his recent illness. Loving thanks are extended to Auntie Mary for her dedication and love to Dad. Flowers are gratefully declined.
