JAMES HAROLD CARSON Harold passed away peacefully in Morden District General Hospital with his wife by his side, October 2, 2000. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Helen of 55 years; his children, Beverley (Wilf) Cooper of Calgary, Shirley of Thornhill, Alan (Karen Pellatt) of Winnipeg and granddaughter Allison Cooper. He was predeceased by his parents George Henry and Alzina (Boyle) Carson; sister Wilma and brothers, Gordon, Albert, Joseph and Norman. Harold was born on his parents farm, February 17, 1916, near Thornhil. He attended Elam and Wellington Schools, completing his formal schooling in 1932. In 1935 Harold made the decision to raise mink. He developed the Carson Blue Iris and Capucine mink. Mink ranching provided his principle source of farm income for 42 years and the opportunity to travel from coast to coast in both Canada and the U.S.A. Harold sold breeding stock in Canada, U.S.A., Holland, Sweden and Russia. Harold and Helen moved from their Thornhill farm to Morden in 1966. Harold continued to actively manage the farm, including a beef herd of Shorthorn and Luing cattle until recently when his health would no longer permit daily visits to the farm. He loved animals and had a special fondness for draft horses. Harold was a strong believer in supporting his local community. He served as a board member with Elam School District and Western School Division (Morden), Morden and Thornhill Co-ops, and he was the manager of Manitoba (Morden) Housing Authority from 1973 to 1988. He was also a member of Manitoba Mink Breeders Association for 50 years, and Canada Mink Breeders as a director for a number of years, Boundary Commission Trail Association and the Shorthorn Breeders Association. Funeral service will be held at St. Pauls United Church in Morden on Saturday, October 7, 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Kerry Craig officiating. Interment will follow at the Knightcot Cemetery, west of Thornhill. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or in honour of Harolds love of history, to the Pembina Threshermens Museum. Wiebe Funeral Chapel, Morden in care of arrangements. 204-822-4755.
