Simon was predeceased by his sister Szaindla Hencel and his precious daughter Angie Engel. He will be lovingly remembered by his devoted wife Lisa; his daughters, Peppi (Hartley) Zelcer, Toby (David) Shapiro, Esther Berenhaut, son-in-law Gordon Engel and grandchildren, Ryan, Laura, Adena, Eric and Brooke. He also leaves his brothers, Morres, Gedalia (Mashka) brothers and sisters-in-law, Sam (Esther) Sztulwark, Harry (Miriam) Sztulwark of East Windsor, New Jersey; his many nieces and nephews and dear friends. Simon was born in Hrubieshow, Poland on November 3, 1923. After the war, he moved to Winnipeg with his family in 1949. In his early years in Winnipeg, he was employed in the garment industry and later devoted the rest of his working career to being a grocer. Together with his family he owned and operated Simons IGA in the North End of Winnipeg for 21 years. Simon was always well liked and respected by his customers, business associates and members of the community. Simon was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather. His family always came first and the good times we spent together will always be treasured. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Dr. Verrelli, the dialysis staff at the St. Boniface Hospital and all the dedicated doctors, nurses and medical staff who provided such exceptional care to Simon. Funeral services were held at the Beth Israel Synagogue and interment at the Shaarey Zedek Cemetery on September 25, 2000. Donations may be made in Simons memory to a charity of your choice. Simon was a remarkable man whose love, strength and courage is a legacy that he passed on to his children, grandchildren and all those whose lives he touched. He was the heart of our family and he put a light in our lives that will shine forever.
