Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMALKA SYBIL LERNER Born in Winnipeg on May 1, 1929, passed away in Toronto on September 18, 2000, after a 20 year battle with a rare heart ailment. Predeceased by parents Edith and Moe Lerner and brothers, Dr. Arthur Lerner and Dr. Alec Lerner. For many years Malka used her gifted talents in the arts communities and later dedicated herself to fundraising for universities in Israel, training for the disabled, and finally the Alberta Heart and Stroke Foundation. Having moved to Toronto for special medical care, she returned each year to her beloved Gimli. Married in 1949, Malka is survived by her husband Joe Lerner; children, Selby, Murray and Robert; grandchildren, Eden Rose and Jay Hyson and her brother Hersh Lerner and many loved nieces and nephews. Malka believed strongly in the power of community and was on the first Board of the Courtyard Co-operative - an intentional community in Toronto. She strived to make life "equal" for persons with disabilities - always focussing on their "gifts." Her humour and style shone. Actress, director, teacher, fundraiser, entrepreneur - she will be greatly missed. The family gives sincere thanks for care and dedication of Toronto hospital staff, Pacer Lab, Dr. Bigelow, Dr. Wigle, Dr. Williams, and especially Dr. Douglas Cameron who always supported her courageous spirit and will to survive; also to Dr. Sidney Nusinowitz, her family doctor. If anyone wishes, donations to the following would be greatly appreciated: Kohai Educational Centre, 41 Roehampton Ave., Toronto, Ont., M4P 1P9 (school for children with developmental disabilities), or Dr. D. Cameron Research Fund, Toronto Hospital Foundation, 621 University Ave., NU 1 - 102, Toronto, Ont., M5G 2C4.
