ERNIE BARR Peacefully on October 9, 2000 at Winnipeg Health Sciences Centre, Ernest Malcolm Barr passed away at the age of 82 years with his family by his side. Ernie was born to Susan and Malcolm Barr in Starbuck, Manitoba on April 8, 1918. He worked on the family farm near Starbuck until he enlisted with the Royal Canadian Air Force in August 1941. Ernie served as a corporal in the RCAF in England then in France, Holland and Germany. He was involved in the establishment of one of the Allied Forces airfields in France shortly after D-Day. Ernie was discharged from the RCAF in October 1945 and then worked for Crown Assets and MacDonald Aircraft (now Bristol Aerospace) before joining Standard Aero Engine Ltd. He worked for SAE for 31 years before retiring as Winnipeg Branch Manager in 1981. Ernie married Jean Carmichael on March 1, 1947 and they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with family and friends in August 1997 at the Assiniboine Park Conservatory. After his retirement in 1981, Ernie and Jean enjoyed their retirement in the full with family and friends. This time together included travel to Australia, New Zealand, UK, France, Spain, Portugal, Hawaii and Southern U.S.A. Ernie is survived by his loving wife Jean; his daughter Cathy (Kerry) of Winnipeg; his three sons Larry of Winnipeg, Don (Debbie) of Regina, Brian (Shirley) of London England, and six grandchildren Jennifer, Sara, Kelly, Jared, Matthew, and Tabitha. He is also survived by his sisters Doris, Belva and Marge, as well as his brothers John, Ronnie, and Ross, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Ernie was part of a large family spread across Canada but it remains a very close and supportive family. In addition, Ernie will be sadly missed by his neighbors and many friends. Funeral service will be held on Friday, October 13, at 12:30 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue, with cremation to follow. Flowers are gratefully declined. If so desired, donations by family and friends can be made to Director of Research, Special Projects, (Account 5681), Health Sciences Centre, 791 Notre Dame Avenue, Winnipeg. Ernies family would like to express their appreciation to Dr. L. Oppenheimer, the nurses and staff of S.I.C.U and GD-2 units of the Health Science Centre.
