In 1959 he became a barber and in 1960 bought his Barbershop in Arborg, where he resided until he retired. John and Mary then moved to Meleb, where he enjoyed hobbies such as hunting, fishing, gardening, carpentry and hat collecting which was surpassed by none. John was known for his immaculate vehicles and took great pride in them. Some of his fondest memories were of family gatherings and his weekend fishing trips to Finns and the Hecla Causeway. In later years John returned to Arborg, joined the Seniors Club where he enjoyed all the activities and spoke often of his morning coffee at the CO-OP with all his friends.
