Date of Passing: Oct 05, 2000
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryHYMIE CHOCHINOV It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Hymie Chochinov on October 5, 2000, at the age of 81. He will be deeply missed by his wife Ruth and his sons, Stuart and Martin; daughter-in-law Barbara; grandchildren, Julie and Christopher; great-grandchildren, Morgan and Patrick; brothers, Moe, Sam and Lou; sisters, Fanny Rogerville and Etie Zabenskie; as well as his many nieces, great nieces, nephews, great nephews, cousins, friends and neighbours. Hymie was born in 1918 in West Kildonan and was raised on the family farm which would become one of the first commercial dairies in Winnipeg, Chochinov Dairy. Gone are his parents, Jacob and Tauba and his brothers, Harry and Saul. Hymie was extremely proud of his parents achievements and took particular pride in Chochinov Park, dedicated in their honour. On November 25, 1951, Hymie and Ruth Fleishman were married at the Shaarey Zedek Synagogue. They were blessed with two sons, Stuart and Martin. Their lives together included family and friends, travel and a rigourous social life, full of bridge, darts, baseball, dancing and bowling, which incidentally brought them together 48 years earlier. His devotion to her was boundless despite his stubborn nature. Hymie will be remembered by many at the helm of Western Messenger and Transfer. With a tenure of over 30 years, he began driving a truck for the company after the war and eventually, came to own and manage the entire operation. After retirement, Hymie was able to fully indulge his numerous passions including fishing, gardening and baseball. As it turns out, many of us have vivid and warm memories of fishing with Uncle Hymie. His garden was legendary for its robust and hardy bounty, while baseball was an example of his robust character, especially after by-pass surgery. Indeed, let us remember Hymie while fishing and in his garden, full of life and health, vigor and strength. Above all else, Hymies greatest joy in life was the children that seemed to gravitate towards him and bask in his warm, gentle humour. From his sons, to his numerous nieces and nephews, as well as their children and until the end, his greatest joys, great-grandchildren, Morgan, 7 and 6 month old Patrick, Hymie revelled in the humour, wisdom and laughter that children brought to his life. May we live, through both our words and actions, in the warmth and generosity of his spirit. The family would like to thank the extraordinary staff at Winnipegs Health Sciences Centre. Their patience and kindness provided Hymie with unwavering respect, compassion and dignity. They are greatly appreciated. Donations can be made to either, The Canadian Diabetes Association, Manitoba Heart and Stroke Foundation or a charity of choice.

Hi Dad. I can't believe it has been twelve years since you've gone. Many many things have changed but I still miss you and think of you every day. A big bear hug and a wet sloppy kiss, just like you used to give us. All my love Mendel - Posted by: Martin Chochinov (Son) on: Sep 10, 2012
