MICHAEL ZLOTY Peacefully, on October 14, 2000, Michael Zloty passed away at Seven Oaks Hospital. His memory will be cherished by his loving wife Alice; their son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Gretchen, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; his brother Stephen; nieces and nephews. Michael joins his parents, Andrew and Maria; his sister Lena and brother Nicholas, in life everlasting. Michael was born on July 5, 1916, in Winnipeg. He was raised in North Winnipeg where he attended school and graduated from Isaac Newton High School. Except for the years of the Second World War, he made his home in North Winnipeg. Mike was employed by Canada Packers until his retirement in 1982. In 1942, he volunteered his services to the Royal Canadian Navy where he served as a Chief Petty Officer. At the end of the Second World War, he returned to Winnipeg and the employ of Canada Packers. It was here that Michael met his bride-to-be Alice Babaluk. On November 13, 2000, they would have celebrated 52 years of marriage. Mike was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Ukrainian Canadian Veterans, Branch 141. Mike loved to swim. This he did three times a week at the North Winnipeg YMCA until its closing. After that time, and until this past summer, he could be regularly found swimming at Seven Oaks Swimming Pool. During the summer, Mike also loved to golf. On two separate occasions, he had a "hole-in-one" at Kildonan Golf Course. Mike enjoyed nurturing his garden and tending to his yard. During the winter, he also enjoyed his four mile walks at Kildonan Park. A celebration of Michaels life will be held on Tuesday, October 17 at 3:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel. The service, with full Legion honours, will be conducted by Rev. Fr. Isidore Dziadyk O.S.B.M. The Royal Canadian Legion will lower their colours to half mast and say farewell to Michael. Service will terminate at the Chapel. A private family interment will take place on Wednesday when Michael is laid to rest with his parents at Brookside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Manitoba Lung Association or the MB Heart and Stroke Foundation. Cropo Funeral Chapel is in care of arrangements, 586-8044.
