DORIS JEAN GATES (nee McGREGOR) Peacefully on Sunday, October 15, 2000, Jean Gates passed away at the age of 83 at Central Park Lodge, 70 Poseidon Bay, Winnipeg, Manitoba. Jean was predeceased by her husband Keith S. Gates in 1985; her parents, William and Ethel McGregor; infant brother William and brother-in-law and sister-in-law Ken and Donalda Gates. She will be lovingly remembered by her sons, Bill (Patricia) grandchildren, Sandra (Gary), James and great granddaughter Cassidy Jean of The Pas, MB; Ken ( Nancy) grandchildren, Rob and Cathy of Winnipeg, MB; Don of Thompson, MB; sister Ina McGregor of Ottawa, Ont.; sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Bill Lee of Qualicum Beach, B.C. and eight nieces and nephews and many cousins and friends. Jean was born in Ft. William (Thunder Bay), Ontario on December 9, 1916, the eldest daughter of William and Ethel McGregor. She completed Grade 13 at Ft. William Collegiate at the age of 16 and attended business and technical college after this. She became the assistant to the secretary of the Ft. William School Board until her marriage to Keith Gates in December, 1945 on his return from The Second World War. During her husband Keiths career with the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, Jean and Keith and their sons lived in Virden, Killarney and Grandview, MB, moving to Winnipeg in 1962. They made many lifelong friends in these communities. In her youth, Jean loved skiing, climbing Mt. McKay, holidays at Camp, The Knitting Club, and her many friends. Ft. William was always "home" for Jean and Keith. In her latter years, she remained very active and health conscious and was able to stay in her home until her health deteriorated in April of this year. Jean was very proud of her Scottish and United Empire Loyalist Heritage. She followed current affairs closely and loved to discuss politics. Jean was an unselfish person who was very involved and lovingly supportive of her immediate and extended family. She took a keen interest in all their endeavours and loved family gatherings. We will miss her dearly. The family would like to thank the Staffs of Central Park Lodge (Poseidon), Medical Rehabilitation Unit of The Victoria Hospital, WRHA Home Care, Dr. J.R.A. Smart and Dr. R. Singer for their excellent and thoughtful care. There will be a memorial service on Thursday, October 19, at 3:30 p.m. in the Thomson Funeral Chapels, 669 Broadway. In lieu of flowers, a donation in Jeans memory to the Arthritis Society or the Victoria Hospital Foundation would be appreciated. THOMSON FUNERAL CHAPELS 783-7211
