Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryEMIL CHEREWAYKO (1941 - 2000) It is with deep sorrow that we announce the sudden passing of Emil Cherewayko on Monday, October 16, 2000 at the Emerson Hospital at the age of 59 years. Emils memory will be forever cherished by his wife Ruth, son Darrin and daughter Karen (Rick). He was a beloved "Papa" to grandchildren Kaitlin, Brett and Dylan. He is also survived by brothers Bill (Jeanette) of Calgary, Gary (Nancy) of Winnipeg, sisters Sylvia (Al) Merrithew of Warren, Lily (Freeman) Fjeldsted of Winnipeg, Susan Smyrichinaky of Georgetown, Indiana and Debbie Cherewayko (Mike Girard) of Riding Mountain, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his mother Mary, father George and infant brother Johnny. Emil was born February 21, 1941 in Sirko, Manitoba. He moved with his family to Emerson in 1949, completed high school and then attended the University of North Dakota. Emil and Ruth were married in 1967 and lived in Winnipeg until 1978. Upon returning to Emerson, he purchased Great West Motors in Dominion City which he operated for 22 years. In 1995, he and Ruth and son Darrin became owners and operators of Barnays Restaurant in Letellier, where he continued to make many friends, who will miss him greatly. The funeral service will be held on Friday, October 20, at 11:00 a.m. from the Zion Lutheran Church in Friedenstahl north-east of Emerson, MB. Viewing will be at the church prior to the service. Pallbearers will be Brian Smith, Doug Irving, Jim Cherewayko, Ron Pearse, Glenn Podolsky, and Jan Rikkelman. The family wishes to express their thanks to the Emerson Ambulance personnel and the staff of the Emerson Hospital. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Emerson Emmanuel Lutheran Church Memorial Fund. Wiebe Funeral Home Altona 204-324-5404 in care of arrangements.
