ETHEL MAY (MASON) (FIELD) HODGSON Peacefully, after a courageous battle with cancer, Ethel passed away at Grace Hospital, in the early hours October 18, 2000 at the age of 86 years. She was born at Ericksdale in November 1913 to Sidney and Margaret Mason. She started school in South Head School, Ericksdale and at age eight continued schooling in Winnipeg at Pinkham School and Brooklynn High School. Her career consisted of skills in sales, also catering, and ran a rooming house at 690 Minto Street, Winnipeg at the time of her marriage to Clarence Hodgson in 1957. Together, they were residents of St. James the rest of their lives. They attended Greenwood and McClure United Churches. Ethel spent many years as treasurer for the United Church Women Unit 6, recently giving up this position due to her illness. She also enjoyed playing Bingo and worked at Sturgeon Creek Bingo until recently. Other activities she took part in were Clubs, Towers of Polo Park, Winnipeg Transit, and St. James Lodge. She made many friends in these activities and will be greatly missed. Ethel has joined her loving husband Clarence who predeceased her in 1981; her precious step daughter Madeline (Bae) Milne in 1998; step son-in-law and grandson Leask and Darren Milne in 1972; sister Jean Scott; brothers Bert, Art, Tommy, George, and Jim; as well as her parents, Margaret and Sidney and brother-in-law Gordie Hodgson. She is survived by her sister Dora (Nellie) Markle; step daughter Pat Checkley (Floyd) grandchildren, Tricia Checkley (Kirby), Deanna Gibson (John), Dawn Sanders (Brad), Brad Checkley, Myles Checkley (Shirley), Murry Milne, David Milne; six great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews; sisters-in-law, Helen Steinke and Thelma Hunter (Harry) and their families. A service of remembrance will be held at McClure United Church, 533 Greenwood Pl. on Monday, October 23 at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Hugo Unruh officiating. A private family interment will be held in Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Mae and Merle in Towers of Polo Park, Jeanette and Ethels many Bingo friends, McClure United Church friends, Home Care, VON, and staff of Grace Hospital especially the Palliative Care Unit for their help and support during Ethels illness. In lieu of flowers, friends and relatives who wish, may donate in Ethels memory to McClure United Church, 533 Greenwood Place, Winnipeg MB R3G 3M1 or Cancer Care Manitoba, 100 Olivia St., Winnipeg MB R3E 0V9.
