PETRO (PETER) MYHALUK On October 24, 2000, after a lengthy illness, Petro Myhaluk, passed peacefully into Gods loving care, surrounded by the love and affection of his wife, family and special friends. Petro was born in the village of Tatariw, nestled in the beautiful Carpathia Mountains of Western Ukraine, on June 16, 1930. Sadly, Petro and his family were forced to flee Ukraine. They arrived in Canada and settled in Winnipeg in 1949. Here, he studied Civil Engineering Technology, and specialized in road construction. He employed his training as a highway construction supervisor for the Province of Manitoba for 26 years. Petro was raised to value community, and he embodied the principle of community advancement through individual involvement. He became and remained very active and well regarded within Winnipegs Ukrainian community, particularly through his involvement with PLAST Ukrainian Youth organization. He was a member of PLAST in Winnipeg since shortly after his arrival, and as a young adult devoted his summers and spare time serving as a PLAST counselor and instructor in Ukrainian arts and crafts. Petro joyfully passed along his considerable knowledge of nature and Ukrainian culture and traditions. He devoted countless hours of volunteer time constructing, maintaining, and remodeling the PLAST facilities at Ukrainian Park campground. He remained a proud and active member of PLAST until his demise, and was pleased and proud that two of his grandsons today carry on the same traditions through their involvement with PLAST. Petro was a spiritual man, and a long-time devoted member of Sts. Vladimir and Olha Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral. Petro valued his recreational time, spent in his beloved great outdoors. Many hours were spent with close friends camping, boating, fishing and hunting. In his younger years, his interests included skiing and scuba diving. Undoubtedly, Petro received the greatest joy by devoting time to his three grandchildren - Ivan, Stephen and Paul. The boys believe that their Gigi had the biggest heart in the world, and felt a love bigger than their words or ours could possibly describe, which poured out from him. Gigi always met the grandkids with enormous hugs and kisses, and many sweet treats. Petro frequently reminded us that it was his duty to "spoil" his grandkids! He did spoil them - with his love, tenderness, generosity and affection. Petro not only "spoiled" his grandchildren; his kindness, affection, and generosity in some way touched all those who had the honour of having known him. He would gladly lend or give his tools, his advice, his help, or his understanding. He neither asked for nor expected anything in return. He never had a harsh word for anyone. When Petro left Ukraine, he left parts of both his family and his heart behind. Fortunately, he had the opportunity to visit his homeland twice since Ukraines independence. There, he renewed family ties and fond memories, and created memories for himself and his wife Stefania. Petro was predeceased by his mother Wasylyna, his father Petro, his brother Oleksa and his sister Anna. Left to mourn his passing are his wife, Stefania; children, Bohdanna Kinasevych (Kevin), Zenon Kinasevych (Melissa), Halyna Kinasevych (David), and Orest Saj (Christina) grandchildren, Paul, Stephen and Ivan Kinasevych; brother Yuri Myhaluk, sister Maria Jakowec, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins both here and in Ukraine. Prayers will be said Friday, October 27 at Sts. Vladimir and Olha Cathedral, 115 McGregor St. at 7:00 p.m. The funeral service will be officiated by Rev. M. Kouts at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, October 28 at Sts. Vladimir and Olha Cathedral, with interment to follow at All Saints Cemetery. Flowers gratefully declined. Donations may be made in Petros memory to PLAST, Children of Chernobyl or CancerCare Manitoba. The family wishes to acknowledge and express their heartfelt gratitude to the excellent caregivers at Riverview Health Centre. VICHNAYA PAMYAT
