WALTER SIWICKI Suddenly on Thursday, October 26, 2000, at the Deer Lodge Centre, Walter, beloved husband of Sophie, passed away at the age of 83. Walter was born on December 17, 1916 in Poland. He enlisted into the army in September of 1938. He served in the First Calvary Regiment of the Polish Army along side the Allies during the Second World War throughout the Middle East, Italy and North Africa. He received the 1934-1945 Star Medal. Also he fought at the battle at Monte Casino which he received a Medal for his bravery. On May 25, 1947 he was discharged from the Army. After the war, Walter immigrated to Alberta, Canada, where he met his future wife Sophie. They moved West and passed through Portage La Prairie in 1949, where they were married. Soon after, in the same year, they settled in Winnipeg and raised their family. Walter worked in the construction field for many years. He worked for companies such as Trident, Comstock, Bird and Borger during his construction years, where he helped to build such buildings as the Deer Lodge Hospital, the Northstar Inn and the Planetarium. The last few years, before his retirement in 1981, he worked for The Cold Storage Company. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Winnipeg Polish Canadian Branch 246. He is survived by his wife, Sophie of 51 years; daughter Wanda Lambert (Jerry and predeceased grandson Daniel), son Alexander (wife MaryAnne, grandsons, Ryan and Michael), son Jerry (wife Kris, children, Jenny, David, Haley and Jon), daughter Christine Gault (husband Carl), daughter Irene LeBleu (husband Guy, grandsons, Steven (April), Armand (Lauren and Destiny) and Jesse), son John (wife Therese, granddaughters, Brittany and Amanda). He will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by all the family as well as his friends. Flowers and gifts are gratefully declined. If friends so desire, donations in Walters memory may be made to the Deer Lodge Centre Foundation, 2109 Portage Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3J 0G3. Our family wishes to extend special thanks to the nursing staff on the 5th floor at the Deer Lodge Centre for taking good care of Walter. Viewing will be on Monday morning, October 30 at 10:00 a.m. followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. at St. John Cantius Roman Catholic Church, 846 Burrows Ave., with Rev. Fr. H. Uczniak officiating. Interment to follow in Holy Ghost Cemetery. Pallbearers will be the Legion Color Party from Branch #246. CROPO FUNERAL CHAPEL IN CARE OF ARRANGEMENTS 586-8044.
