MERVIN ALFRED SCHELL Mervin Alfred, born November 1, 1911 in Tisdale, Sask., died peacefully, surrounded by his family, at Saanich Peninsula Hospital on October 30, 2000 at age 88. Predeceased by his sister, Lois and brother, Ted, he is survived by his wife of 63 years, Frances; daughter, Heather (Jim) Flanigan of Bulington, Ont.; son, Spencer (Liisa) Schell of Winnipeg; five grandchildren, Jeff Flanigan, Patti (Darren), Raina (Ryan), Maija and Merritt; great-granddaughter, Kira; sister, Alfretta of Nipawin, Sask.; nieces and nephews. As a young man, Mervin was enrolled in engineering at the University of Manitoba when he took the opportunity to join his uncle in the printing business in Winnipeg. This began a career of over 30 years where, as manager and owner, Mervin built the Wallingford Press on Kennedy Street in Winnipeg into a thriving business. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge, Fidelity Chapter 146, where he rose to the position of Pastmaster. Mervin also enjoyed outdoor life. He loved golf, hunting, fishing and especially the many years he spent with family and friends at the Schell cottage on Falcon Lake in the Manitoba Whiteshell. After he retired, Frances and Mervin moved to Victoria where they enjoyed many years of healthy and fulfilling retirement living before Mervins illness. The family would like to thank the staff of the Extended Care Unit of the Saanich Peninsula Hospital. Their ongoing support and care for Mervin was a great comfort to his wife Frances and members of his family. A memorial service was held at First Memorial Funeral Chapel, Victoria, BC on Friday, November 3, 2000 at 2:00. Flowers gratefully declined. Friends may make a donation to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or to a charity of their choice.

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • I used to work as temporary editor at the Wallingford Press on Kennedy during the summer holidays when I was not teaching in Winnipeg. My stepfather owned the Western Jewish News and Buyers' Market publications and we printed those at the Wallingford Press. To this day I can still smell the ink and the steel used to set the print in place. Good memory. - Posted by: Richard Tessler (Former Worker at Wallingford Press) on: Dec 11, 2019
