LENA STREMBICKI (GAVAGA)

LENA STREMBICKI (nee GAVAGA) Passed away at the Rockyview Hospital, Calgary, on Sunday October 29, 2000 at the age of 88 years. Lena was born on February 4, 1912 in Transcona, Manitoba. On October 3, 1936 she married Stanley Strembicki and the couple resided in Transcona, later moving to Springfield, Manitoba. She moved to Calgary in 1985, where she lived with her daughter Lorraine and family. She was loved deeply by all who knew her and will be sadly missed. Lena is survived by her two daughters, Arlene DeJong of Iowa, Lorraine and her husband Gerd Steinmeyer of Calgary; six grandchildren, Brenda, Brent and Bruce DeJong, Chantel, Mark and Kaitlin Steinmeyer as well as four great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Stanley in 1976, her parents, Afanasi John and Mary Gavaga and brother Alfred. Lena enjoyed her many hiking trips to the mountains where she developed many long-term friendships as well as her volunteer time at the Kerby Center. Lenas generosity,compassion and friendly smile touched the lives of many people and will not be forgotten. Funeral services will be held at McInnis & Holloways Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W., Calgary, AB, 403-243-8200) on November 2 at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Garnet Leach officiating. Interment to follow in Winnipeg at a later date.
