STELLA MARJORIE SPURRILL (nee ASKEW) Peacefully, at St. Boniface Hospital, on Tuesday morning, October 31, 2000, Mom passed away after a long struggle with heart failure. She is survived by sisters, Doris Johnson of Winnipeg, Kay Moore of Ottawa, and Grace Malo of Kamloops; brothers, Art Askew of Randolph, MB and Richard Askew of Winnipeg; sons, Dan (Betty) of Winnipeg and Ken (Pat) of Pritchard, BC; granddaughters, Caroline of Squamish, BC and Esther and Charlotte of Pritchard; grandsons, Reg and Kevin of Winnipeg, Aiden, Raymond, Matthew, Geordie, Benjamin and Charlie, all of Pritchard. Born on December 31, 1912 in Brooklands, MB to Alice and Edwin Askew, and attending schools in West Kildonan, Fish Lake S.D. and West End Winnipeg, Stella graduated from Daniel McIntyre C.I. (Commercial) in 1929. She worked in Eatons Grill Room until she married her childhood friend Leo Spurrill in 1938, and farmed at Fish Lake near Chatfield until 1944 when they moved with their two boys to St. Vital. Stella worked in Eatons meat department from 1949 till 1977. A faithful member of St.Vital/Southdale Alliance Church for 40 years, Mom taught Sunday School and Pioneer Girls and was active in the Womens Group. Stella was predeceased by her parents; sisters, Hattie and Elsie; brothers, Freddie, Alfred, Eddie and John; and by her husband Leo in 1996. Mom loved children. She cared for her younger siblings, her boys, her grandchildren, Sunday School students, neighbour children, into her last years. She was great with plants, and continued to garden well into her eighties. To her last days she loved to sing the old songs. For years she loved knitting, crocheting, petitpoint and d rugs. She continued to read her Bible and other books. She made new friends easily. We wish to give special thanks to the staff at Donwood EPH, at Misericordia H.hookeC. 6th floor Cornish, at St.Boniface Emergency 6A and 6E, and to Dr. Kevin Coates, for their care over the years and recent months. Funeral services will be held at Kerrs Funeral Chapel, 120 Adelaide St., Saturday, November 4 at 1:30 p.m. Viewing will be held between 12:30 and 1:30 p.m. For arrangements phone 943-6688.
