DAISY EDITH PAULLEY (nee DAY) On November 8, 2000 at the Health Sciences Centre, our dear mother and friend, Daisy Paulley, passed away peacefully. Predeceased by her beloved husband Fred in 1997, she is survived by her sons, Tom (Bev), Garth (Valerie) grandchildren Ellen and Nolan; brothers-in-law and their wives and families, and numerous cousins. Family was very important to mother and she kept in constant touch. Mother was born in Woodrow, Saskatchewan on February 8, 1919. She had an active childhood attending school, horseback riding, and helping with chores on the family farm at nearby Glentworth. Her Dad used to say that she loved horses so much that she would run half a mile to catch a horse to ride a quarter of a mile! After completing school, mother moved to Winnipeg where from 1940 to 1950 she was employed in the Eatons general office. During the war years, 1941 to 1945, she also assisted as a nurses aide at the old Grace Hospital in the evenings. Growing up during the Depression gave mother a sense of social and economic justice that she never lost. She became an active member of the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) and later the New Democratic Party. She served as president of the Winnipeg NDPs womens group and Wolseley NDP, as well as being active in the Old Winnipeg South Centre constituency. In fact, it was at a CCF youth meeting where she met Fred, who in 1950 became her beloved husband for the next 46 years. Mother was active in the Cooperative movement in the 1960s in Winnipeg, serving on the Co-op Parliament. She was the first woman appointed to the Legal Aid Board of Directors in 1971. From 1982 to 1996 she and father ran a bed and breakfast in their Furby Street home, welcoming people from around the world. They also loved to travel, visiting Great Britain numerous times over the years. Mother and father were active in many organizations, namely the English-Speaking Union where mother wrote the newsletter, the St. James Horticultural Society where she was responsible for telephone coordination, and the Manitoba Antique Association, where they were both founding members and mother was again responsible for the newsletter. She also volunteered at Dalnavert, Macdonald House and received a 20-year commendation award for her work. More recently, Mother moved in to the new Kiwanis Courts, on Ness Avenue. While her stay was far too short, she enjoyed the cribbage games with friends, the caring staff, the good food, and the snack! The family sincerely thanks the staff and residents of the Kiwanis Courts, Dr. McDowell and staff at the Grace Hospital Emergency Department, and Dr. Fewer, Dr. Hejji, and staff at the Health Sciences GD-2 wing for all their many kindnesses and care they gave to mother. A memorial service will be held on Monday, November 13, 1:30 p.m. at Westminster United Church, corner of Westminster and Maryland Street, with Reverend Robert Campbell officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations in Daisys memory may be made to the Westminster Foundation, 745 Westminster Ave., R3G 1A5 or the Metropolitan Kiwanis Courts Solarium Project, 2300 Ness Ave., R3J 1A2. We will remember her! NEIL BARDAL INC. 949-2200
