CALVIN HUGHES Our family sadly announces the passing of Calvin Hughes on Sunday, November 12th, 2000 at the Victoria General Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. He will be sadly missed and fondly remembered to his beloved wife Audrey; son Dean and wife Sandy; grandsons Bradley, Brent and Cory; daughter Shannon and husband Ross and granddaughters Randee and Robyn and the grandchildrens dogs Shadow and Lucy. Besides his immediate family he leaves to mourn his passing, two brothers, Jim (Fran) of Calgary and George (Marlene) of Nanaimo and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his mother Florence in 1976 and his father Leonard in 1987. Calvin was born in 1936 and grew up in rural Portage La Prairie. He married Audrey on October 15, 1955. They moved to Winnipeg where he joined the Fort Gary Police Department that later became Winnipeg City Police. He was involved in combat shooting and held the trophy for the Canadian Police Combat Pistol Championship for several years. He contributed to the community through his involvement with Crime Prevention, Rossbrook House and Block Parents. He retired as an inspector on June 2, 1990. Another way that he contributed was through the faithful donation of his blood. Cal was a devoted husband of 45 years. He was also a very devoted grandfather. He played a vital and special role in the lives of his grandchildren, attending all their activities and events. When it came to the grandsons hockey, Grandpa was an avid fan and supporter attending all the games faithfully, and loving every minute. He was the Winnipeg Junior Jets 87s biggest fan. His love for, and total commitment to all the grandkids enriched their lives in so many ways and will leave a lasting impression. His retirement allowed him and Audrey more time to be where Cals heart lay... in his fifth wheel at a campground with family and friends, or on the lake fishing with his son and grandsons. His camping continued on in the winter when he and Audrey made their yearly trek to Pine-to-Palm Park in Texas. Cal and Audrey were long-time members of the Goldeye Chapter of the Good Sam RV Club. Cal faced his greatest challenge with determination and strength. His positive attitude and the way in which he handled his illness inspired, comforted and strengthened those of us who knew him. There will be a funeral service on Thursday, November 16, at 2:30 p.m. in the Thomson Funeral Chapels, 669 Broadway. A private family interment will take place in Garry Memorial Park. The family would like to thank Drs. Shnider, Maxwell and Jason as well as the wonderful nurses and staff in both oncology and the fifth floor at the Victoria General Hospital. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Cals name to the Victoria General Hospital, Oncology Department, 2340 Pembina Highway, Winnipeg, MB, R3T 2E8. THOMSON FUNERAL CHAPELS 783-7211
